"Calling the Estates": A CK Brittany AAR-Update: Intro

« Calling the Estates »: A CK Brittany AAR
Welcome all to my first AAR, about my favorite nation, Brittany.
This nation has a special meaning, as on my half French side (the other half is Spanish), my grandma is from Brittany and my grandpa is from Normandy. I know that historically these two nations have fought and disliked each other. Why not choose Normandy you might ask. Well because everybody loves Brittany! Plus I share the French vision of no English presence on the continent and “protecting” my Celtic brothers from Anglo-Saxon and Norwegian threat.

If you want to know more about Brittany and its context in real 1066 history go look in Wikipedia, for they have some great info. Although compared to my Breton sources, some might be questionable.

I will be playing with CK DV 2.1 beta patch with DV: IP and the add-on.
To make this AAR interactive I decided to emulate the Breton Estates, sort of Parliament, the kings and dukes of Brittany used to consult and pass important laws. These Estates compromised of Lords, clergymen and city representatives. This AAR will have a poll for every major event, in-game and role playing. Readers will vote on the different outcomes possible, the minimum of votes required to close it will depend of the number of direct vassals. So when I’m a duke, all counts will have a vote. When I become a King, dukes and counts that directly report to me will have a vote.

Also I wish this to be a learning experience for me, new comers and people wishing to play a successful game with Brittany. Indeed this duchy is kind of hard to play at start, since it’s between France and England, and you start with only one province which might make you vulnerable to rebellious vassals. Also with all my hours of play time and forum reading I find myself that I have reached some “plateau” in learning the game mechanics. Indeed I have yet to succeed in having cultural conversion (in-game), understanding how to create a good king, get the emperor trait, and organize the kingdom to avoid constant rebellion which slows the pace of the game. In a way the Estates will be also a way of debating and giving me advice in certain situations.

I will try to respect a few rules, so this doesn’t become a rule the world by the end of the game. Also if everything goes according to plan I might continue this AAR with EU3, if I manage to convert the save with ulmont’s save game converter (I tried it already with previous games I played, with no success). So let us not get ourselves ahead, here are the rules:

• Cheating, reloading and editing the save game will try to be avoided at all cost except in these cases:
o Role playing purposes
o Majority vote by the Estates (see role playing for details)
o Some awkward bugs (like having two Mongol il-khanat kings)

• Expansion will try to be limited to the British Isles and the frontiers of the Carolingian Empire. If during the game I acquire lands beyond those limits they will be given to a family member/courtier without land, and will let them declare independence and remain free.

• In case of regency, ruler is age <16, the Estates gains more power as it is consulted for these cases:
o Declaring war of aggression and defensive alliances (does not apply to in support of vassal)
o Improvement building choice
o Revoking/granting titles.
o Decision to send fosterlings (I choose who is sent though)
o Claim titles
o Changing the laws of the country if game allows
o In game events (those that concern the state)

• When ruler is 16-21, the Estates can decide on:
o Declaring war of aggression
o Change laws of the country if game allows
o Revoke/granting titles
o In game events (those that concern the state)

• When ruler is age >21, the power of the Estates is limited on consultation to:
o Change the law of the country if game allows
o In game events (those that concern the state)

NOTE: this list is not definitive and will be modified as things go.
Any help is always appreciated.

I am very much looking forward to this. :) I have a huge soft spot in my heart for Brittany and the Bretons; they are one of history's forgotten people - but a very interesting one. Good luck with your setup!

Intro

Intro (1067-01-01): A Breton Duchy under the command of a French Duchess, “Vive la Duchesse, Vive la Bretagne!”

New Year was celebrated over a great feast in the castle of count Hoel Kerne, husband of the Duchess Hawise the Rennes in Nantes. Nantes was the ancient capital of the kingdom of Brittany and theoretically of the Duchy of Brittany. But reality was different; this whole situation was a masquerade, though many barons and the other counts. Hoel Kerne, count of Cournaille and Nantes, had managed to gain control of the duchy without become duke himself. Indeed he owned two counties, his wife was the ruler of the Duchy and his friendship with William of Normandy, now King of England assured him a very stable and powerful position in Breton intrigues. His marriage with Hoel of Rennes was at the beginning a way to ensure the independence of the Duchy towards the aggressive and powerful Kingdom of France and limit the interests of the neighboring Norman lords. With all of this Hoel Kerne could ensure the prosperity of his dynasty. His only weakness was that he only had one son with his wife and he was a newly born. Mortality rate being quite high among infants, the death of his prince would mean the end of his ambitions.

But Hawise was not a puppet, she had plans for the Duchy, her Frankish genes would show their superior genius to the sons of Vikings and play her French cousins. She might not be of Breton origin but she was a devoted wife and sought the welfare of her subjects. She would establish the basis for the advent of a new Breton kingdom, larger that of Nominoe. But two main obstacles hindered her projects: England and France.

As long as England remained on the continent, they would interfere with her ambitions of uniting the Duchy of Brittany and Normandy, thus enlarging the ducal domain without provoking civil war in Brittany. Indeed she had claims on the neighboring province of Maine, owned by the son of William the Conqueror and the county of Avranches. But England was too powerful to take on. Nevertheless she knew that Anglo-Saxon lords of the north would try to rebel and spark civil war to throw back the Normans to the sea. She would wait for the right moment to take advantage of this.

But when William declared independence from France, to claim the throne of England, he made many French lords angry, like the King of France. He was scared that lords in his kingdom would want to declare independence from him, like the Dukes of Aquitaine and Provence. Hawise would pledge her duchy to the crown of France, even if that would upset her vassals. With the help of the French kingdom she would conquer what was rightfully Breton. She also knew that her French cousins liked war and act as kings in their own domains. If the French crown could not expand its own domain, her power would be too weak when the powerful dukes would try to claim independence. Divide and conquer these two powers would ensure her success.

Thx for the quick reply

Don't worry we are not forgotten, now more than ever I see Bretons celebrate their culture and history.

Looks nice. I'll be the follower.

Thx everybody for your encouragement and feedback.

I agree there aren't enought Brittany AAR, that's why I decided to make one to show how to become a kingdom a smash France and England.

The tactic that has always come out of my playing experience is that France will always fall apart because of powerful duchies like Toulouse, Aquitaine and Flanders. On the other hand england seems to suffer some rebellion but always manages to crush it. So it is better to declare independence from France as its power will decline quickly.
