I've just reinstalled EU2 and AGCEEP after a lengthy time away and tried to play one of my usual games(a couple of times before, I'd chosen Muscovy/Russia at the start of the Grand Campaign, and wanted to see how Russia would fare if they were given the Latin technology tree from the start and had roughly the same benefits re technology-level as the United Kingdom/England - so, normally, I would enter in the event 3423"Peter The Great's Reforms"(the 1st option) which gives me exactly that), and then I enter in the event-code 3427 twice and, each time, choose the 2nd option so as to get rid of the 2 manufactories thatevent-code 3423 gives me.

The trouble is that, this time, unlike previous occasions, as soon as I activate 3423 event-code, the coat-of-arms at the top-left of my screen disappears completely leaving an empty black space, so that I can no longer change the quality/aristocracy/religion etc. settings any more.

Why does this occur in this latest patch? Regardless, can anyone tell me how to give a specific country (that one is playing) the Latin technology-tree without having to use the above method, now that it's failed?

I reckon some people may well argue that this is "against the spirit of the game" or something similiar. However, I find it dispiriting that some countries, such as the UK, get automatic benefits with certain events without even trying, while other countries are deliberately sabotaged with relatively artificial events designed to break up their empire(eg:- losing cores). My primary reason for playing EU2 is to imagine "what if" things had been different and the Ottoman Empire, say, had had the same rate of technological advancement as the United Kingdom etc.

Lastly, is there any point in buying and playing EU3(or indeed Hearts of Iron 3?). I've read that Paradox tends to produce a pretty rubbish, incomplete first version of its games, then produces a pretty good 2nd version, with the 3rd version usually being a disaster, with the wrong things "improved".

You can change it in the country.csv file in the DB-folder. You can also change it in the savefile, under technology -> group. I haven't tested it though, so I'm not sure if it works.

:D

So in other words you want to ignore cultural and political factors? I'd play Civilization, although leader traits change things as well.

Given the first statement, you almost certainly want EU3. EU3 goes for the more "sandboxy" feel than EU2 (especially EU2/AGCEEP). And I hear In Nomine is pretty good, although I haven't played it myself.

Not necessarily. I'm quite happy with the historical events, as such, and the religious angle etc.. I just want to picture a scenario where the rate of technology-increase of any particular non-western nation was the same as in western europe. What I loathe are the random events which I always turn off., as an option.

I've tried other stategy games like Civilisation and empire earth, and even rome:total war. Most of them were so bland, I couldn't stand it.I think I'll avoid EU3 and HOI3 for now, though, given all the negative rumours. I already made a bad mistake and bought the first Victoria Paradox game, when I should really have waited for the sequel.

HoI3 will be historical and will have historical events.
And even beautiful 3D... but what can be worse than EU3 map?

@CromCruachan: in this case better save the game at start and edit the savefile with notepad for MOS country tag (Muscovy). Just replace "group = orthodox" with "group = latin" (without double quotes) in technology section.

You lose shield and flag of Muscovy because event you fire includes a gfx change for them that is only designed for Russia (RUS).
