Ansbach was an interesting little principality that managed to survive for most of the game's timeframe. Despite its small size, it took part in the 30 Years War, played enough of a role in the 7 Years War to have a march dedicated to their dragoons, and was instrumental in the creation of a unified Protestant cause throughout the German states.
Ansbach
Traditions:
+10% Production efficiency (Resources from the salt mines)
-25% Mercenary maintenance (Shared with German Generic, notable as mercenaries for the Prussians and the British in later periods)
Historical Lands of the Hohenzollerns: +1 Yearly Legitimacy
While the Hohenzollern family is most notable for their status as Electors of Brandenburg, Kings of Prussia, and later as Kaisers of a united Germany, the family first came to prominence in Franconia. It was their status as Burgraves of Nuremburg that enabled the dynasty to place itself in a position to inherit Brandenburg. Despite the Brandenburg-Ansbach branch being a junior branch of the family beginning in the mid-16th century, they remained the holders of the family's first notable titles.
The Margrave Wars: -10% Core-creation cost
Ansbach and its sister principality Bayereuth were the result of the division of the Burgraviate of Nuremberg, with many of the territories disputed between the two annexed to the Free City. Two wars were later fought by the Margraves of Ansbach against the Free City of Nuremberg to regain suzerainty over those historical lands of the Burgraviate. While the wars both resulted in status quo ante bellum, the historical claims on the land persisted from the previous title.
The Rebuilding of Plassenburg: +1 Diplomatic Reputation
In the aftermath of the Second Margrave War, the castle at Plassenburg was destroyed by the invading forces friendly to Nuremberg. The later Margraves decided to rebuild the castle into one of the most splendid palaces in the Empire. The fortifications were vast enough to warrant a combined Bavarian-French army lay siege to it during the Napoleonic wars, and its amenities impressive enough for the Prussian King to offer to buy it from his cousin. In the time since the Napoleonic Wars it has been used as a prison, a hospital, a training ground, and a museum.
The Franconian Reformers: +1 Tolerance of the True Faith, +5% Church power
The Ansbach-Hohenzollerns preceded the senior Brandenburg-Hohenzollern branch in conversion to Lutheranism. Margrave George the Pious converted after hearing Luther's stirring testimony at the Diet of Worms, and later mainained a correspondence with the reformer, in addition to sheltering other proponents of the reformation. He was later instrumental in the formulation of the Marburg Colloquy along with the Elector of Saxony, which united the protestants of the Empire around common articles of faith. The influence of the rather small Principality of Ansbach within the nascent Protestant Reformation was rather outsize.
Invite Protestant Exiles: -10% Development cost
Albert II of Ansbach offered asylum to Protestants fleeing Austria in the aftermath of the Thirty-Years War. In combination with administrative and social reforms, the influx of new people to populate the war-ravaged lands led to a relatively fast recovery from the destruction wrought by the long conflict.
The Wolf of Ansbach: -1 National Unrest
In 1685 the city of Ansbach was attacked by a man-eating wolf. The superstitious citizens of the city believed that the wolf may have been the vengeful spirit of their recently passed (but little missed) bürgermeister reincarnated into a werewolf. The wolf was eventually chased from the forest and killed by the townspeople. In a bizarre act to banish the evil spirit, the wolf's snout was cut off, it was dressed in a man's clothes, and a mask and wig in the likeness of the bürgermeister were placed over its head before being gibbeted.
Dragoons of Ansbach: +15% Cavalry Combat Ability
Auf, Ansbach-Dragoner!
Auf, Ansbach-Bayreuth!
Schnall um deinen Säbel
und rüste dich zum Streit!
Ambition:
+5% Discipline (The reputation of the troops from Brandenburg-Ansbach and their service in the Prussian army in the Seven-Years War warrants this, I think)
