I was thinking. Was there anything like an anthem during the pre nationalism. the Marseillaise is called the oldest national anthem in europe. What about france before. They sure as hell played something on coronations , opening of an new Colony etc etc. There must atleast have been an Royal Anthem or a song that all related to the nation in question. For many of the Large nations..
Anyone who knows anything about this ?

There are Anthems wich have text and lyrics that are older than the Marseillaise, such as the German Anthem (Music of Haydn)and the Dutch Anthem Wilhelmus van Nassoue (music and lyrics from the sixteenth century). I myself believe that the Danish Anthem is the oldest of Europe. They claim at least, that it came with their flag in the middle ages. Maybe nationalistic nonsense, but the song does sound old.
I think that the Marseillaise is the first real National Anthem. So Although some songs are much older, they weren't used as National Anthems. I know that f.i. in the Netherlands in the nineteenth century we used a different song: Wier neerlands bloed.. The older song was seen as to royalistic. but that is another discussion

hey

Do you have the text of the old one ??

Don't forget the infamous "Rule Britannia!", which by the way, the original lyrics had even been changed by the Jacobites waiting for the return of the Stuarts on the throne of England.

Don't forget the good old 4 Coronation Anthems sang at the coronation of George II in 1727. On one these, the famous "Zadok the Priest" is still sing during coronation, today---in 1953 the last time ;)

Here are the text of Zadok the Priest:

"Zadok the Priest and Nathan the Prophet
Anointed Solomon King
An all people rejoiced, and said,
God Save the King, Long live the King,
May the King live forever. Amen
Alleluia"

In the music, there a famous introduction with violon before choir enter.
There are 3 parts (in the Handel's music):
1-Zadok the Priest and Nathan the Prophet
Anointed Solomon King
2-An all people rejoiced, and said
3-God Save the King, Long live the King,
May the King live forever. Amen

R.F.
Alleluia

Perhaps one of the Scandinavians can enlighten me?

I know that the "Dannebrog" is either the Danish national flag or the Danish national anthem (about the flag), but I cannot remember which. In either case it is the oldest in Europe.

--> Danish national flag, and the original Dannebrog has been destroyed during WWII. So it is the oldest, but the oldest one is gone. :)

Dating back to at least 16th century, the Turkish military march anthem goes like this:

O Turk, O Turk,
regard your freedom with Love.
the [Turkish] Nation, doom your enemy.

While the character of the Ottoman Empire was far from containing any nationalistic sentiments in it in the modern European sense, this military march anthem seemed to me as always containing that bit of nationalism.

It is especially interesting when you consider this is sung by Jenissaries, who are converted non-Muslim troops in the service of the empire. Essentially, this is religious post-identity reconstruction along national lines.

I always thought the Spanish Anthem was the oldest (The Marcha Real), but then again, perhaps I only want it to be the oldest. It is my favorite anthem of them all .... :D

No, I think it is the Allies who bombarded it, it is late in the war.

No it was lost in battle by King Hans(John?)in 1500, doing the battle of the Ditmarsken in Schleswig-Holstein. The Flag was almost destroyed by moisture by the time it was recovered in 1559. The flag was placed in Slesvig cathedral, alongside other relics and was finaly lost in a fire some 100 years later.

I remember having read the Swiss national anthem was the oldest one (it seems to me I also read it and found it was quite funny : talking about the beautiful mountains and the pretty green meadows...nothing like the Marseillaise).

I read also that in France, before the revolution, the music played during major events was usually religious hymns, but (when sang) often with various texts glorifying the monarchy/monarch instead of the original religious texts. Amongst them, "Dieu sauve le roi" (God save the king) which would have been originally a french anthem later used by the english royalists, when the Stuart king of England seek refuge in France, then reused by his opponents(or something like that).

The Spanish anthem was recognized as anthem in the 18th century, but it exist from many years before, it was from prussia, was a military march.
