I've been considering getting this game for a while, but am still on the fence. My question is: are there some good mods out there, that spice the game up? As it stands, it seems like fun, but would get old pretty quickly, and seeing as how I can't see the User Mods section pre-purchase, I thought I'd ask.

Uh.. yes. And it's the only active one. The thread right below it had the last post a month ago, and another 4 steps down you're in early January territory.
Mind, at least two of the earlier mods (a new start date and impassable mountains on the map) were integrated into official patches.

It's a very major and impressive mod though. If you want details you should pm chatnoir17 who is leading the project.

Adding anything to the game with no ships will be rather peculiar. The Japanese armies look funny enough already as they cross the straits marching on dotted lines.
Yeah. The superiority of Korean navy against its Japanese counterpart was very critical for Chinese/Korean forces defeating the Japanese invasion. With no ships the Korean invasions are impossible to represent in the game in any meaningful sense. If Korea is to be added in the game then it needs to be in an expansion.

I'd like to know this question too. I played the demo a bit, and while it seemed decent, mods are a major factor in what games I purchase (for example, I've held off on buying Civ 5 as there are no real good mods, unlike Civ 3 and 4.) But with the way these forums are set up, I can't even browse the mod forums on most games, to SEE if there's anything worthwhile there. I've seen people reference in this thread, and others the main Sengoku mod, but nobody lists it's name, or a real synopsis, so if it's not too much trouble, could someone pm me the mods info or something? Hell, you could just copy-pasta the whole page, excluding links to the mod and such.

Nice try bro but links can't be included ;) LOL

Main (planned) features of Monumenta Iaponiae Historica (MIH)

I. Scenarios of several interesting periods in the Japanese history
1. The Genpei War(1180)
2. The Nanbokucho Period(1333)
3. The Reign of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu(1399)
4. the Onin War(1467)
5. The Birth of Oda Nobunaga(1534)
6. The Rise of Nobunaga(1551)
7. The Battle of Okehazama(1560)
8. The Anti-Nobunaga Alliance(1571)
9. The Death of Nobunaga(1582)
10. The Battle of Sekigahara(1600)

II. Expanded Family Trees for Historical Characters
These 10 scenarios mean of course the significant increase of characters, however MIH added their ancestors too. For example, the clan members of the Shimazu or Date appear in each scenario, and these characters are tied with the father-son relationship between 1180 (or earlier) and 1600.

III. Expanded Game Mechanics
The following features are already added in MIH.

1. Additional events
a. Interactions with the Imperial Court
b. Seasonal events
c. Educational events
d. Historical events for each scenario
e. Building events

2. More thrilling battle
a. x3 Movement of the Army
b. Siege check in each 15 days

3. Provincial management
a. altered building effects of castles and cities
b. added new guild buildings
c. All provinces are specialized as economical base or military base.

4. New traits with Japanese virtues and kanji
Since the traits of vanilla contain some Western virtues and icons such as angel, MIH replaced them with Japanese ones. Some of you might be unable to read kanji, but they are just icons, so you don't need to understand them. Please just try to feel them instead of "to read"!

5. Optional anime/manga character portraits

... and more will come in future!

IV. I need your help!
Since I am the only one active modder for this mod (except some supporters in the credit list) and there are so many thing to be added, I really need any help for this mod. If you are interested in adding characters, scripting events or painting, it would be very appreciated. Mod beginners are also welcomed. Sengoku is rather simple game, and good one to learn how to mod the Paradox games.

Credits
- awak for the wonderful data of the Genpei War scenario
- Hister for some English corrections
- soran for creating Battle of the Sekigahara scenario
- Gshock for the historical reseach
- Shogun 144 for the texts of adding traits

Why does this mod has a Latin name?
As the tendency of major mods on this forums on the one hand, and as the homage to an historical record "Monumenta Historiae Iaponiae" written by the Jesuits and to "Monumenta Germaniae Historica".

Any help and feedback will be very appreciated!

I'm playing MIH right now and it's brilliant. I'm still getting to grips with the changes to economy and levies but first impressions are as follows:

* Sieges finally complete within reasonable time frames - bonus
* Big clans (1467 scenario) are now broken up into smaller sub-clans so there is more room to breathe initially; makes the map more fluid as well. I love this change, makes for a much better game
* Kanji replacing trait icons - still 50/50 on this but starting to get used to it. May even be able to familiarise myself more with kanji :)
* Overall I need to spend much more time with MIH to properly assess but it has definitely not taken anything away from vanilla game, the only changes are for the better.

Give MIH a go, I say.

Thanks for that summary on MIH, BT. Your second point is especially useful; many positions in the vanilla game 1467 start are too small to be viable contenders, imho, and interesting to play more for the challenge of seeing how long one can survive, than for actually becoming Shogun. "Size makes right" in Sengoku!
