I just had this idea: What if you needed a mech part to replace a destroyed limb on your mech? This would make it necessary to keep a supply of spare parts for your favorite mechs, as well as making the rare mechs more difficult to maintain due to lack of available parts.

Do you guys know of a mod which already does this?

I am not sure which Mod does this but I really like your idea here. I don’t recall seeing such a use for Mech Pieces suggested before.

Hey Prussian and thanks! :)

If someone wants to nick the idea for their mod, feel free to do so. It's unlikely (but not entirely impossible) that I'd get around to implement such a mod myself.

Thinking about it some more, there are a few problems with the idea:
  1. A player should probably be allowed to field mechs that are missing a limb since you're not guaranteed to have parts for a complete repair, and you may still want to use it.
  2. Ejecting from the mech destroys the head. It seems harsh to require a mech part to replace the head every time you eject...
  3. One would need to take control over mech assembly, since it's not guaranteed that you'd like to assemble a new mech from your parts any more. You may want to keep the parts to repair the one mech you already have deployed.
  4. It should probably be possible to scrap a heavily damaged mech for parts instead of C-bills. It's better to have 1 functional mech and spare parts rather than 2 crippled mechs in your mech bays.
But if those complications could be sorted out, it would be very interesting to see how it plays out in game.

it could probably be done with the mech engineer and custom components mod

i dont think they have that capability now but of the mods i know i think they could be adapted

I like the idea. Battletech in the 3025 era is supposed to be a time, when even the great houses struggled to keep their mechs up and running. It's far too easy to maintain them in game. And because it could give a little boost to my beloved Cataphract. As a FrankenMech it is build from parts of the Marauder, PhoenixHawk and Shadowhawk and could be repared with those parts. :)
