What recommendations would you have for someone looking for a building / city / small civilization style of game??

  • Is this game really good?
  • Does it have enough content?
  • Is the game "micro heavy"? Are there quality of life tools in place to help?
  • What is "super cool" and "really annoying" about the game??
  • If so would you recommend a purchase at full price? How about a purchase "on sale"?
  • What edition [Base, Digital Deluxe, First Colony (with season pass)] would you recommend?
  • What "must have" or "must avoid" DLC is out there??
  • Are there clearly better games in the same genre? If so what [PlanetBase??]??

My background: I like strategy games [4x mostly ... light grand strategy maybe] but I also like to play around with city / village building games.

I don't have many city-builder games but I did get BANISHED from Steam while on sale and I do like to play around with it but I'm thinking I'd like to try another game with a different art style and a different setting ... like Mars :)

Did I ask a poor question OR has apathy set in?? To be honest I figured I'd get extreme opinions one way or the other but I'm surprised not to get anyone's opinions at all.

I think the sale is still good for the next day or so ... still time for some last second opinions.

  • Is this game really good?
It's one of the few city builder style games I come back to
  • Does it have enough content?
It could definitely do with more content. Though if Space Race is anything to go by the content that is coming will be top notch. Hopefully Paradox will keep supporting it, it definitely needs fleshing out to keep it relevant.

It is somewhat micro heavy, but that's down to the nature of a "survival" city builder IMO. That said, the AI is better than it was at launch which helps a lot.
  • What is "super cool" and "really annoying" about the game??
The early part of the game is great, you really feel like you have to balance a multitude of competing priorities. The late part of the game is pretty much the opposite. I feel like every game definitely has a clear point where I want to call it a day.

Yes, I'd reccomend it. I got my money's worth out of it.
  • What edition [Base, Digital Deluxe, First Colony (with season pass)] would you recommend?
The base, plus Space Race.
  • What "must have" or "must avoid" DLC is out there??
Weirdly, Marsvision. Normally I'd not recommend a music pack, but the music in surviving mars is actually really immersive and draws you into the game.

I've not had much interest in other games in the survival city-buikling genre.

I played it at lunch so maybe they updated it a little bit.
But form my point of view this is not standart sandbox city building game (like Cities, Tropico,...). This feels much more like the survival game. Meaning that you need to carefully plan each building to keep balance between produced resources and consumed resources. If you build too much of something (very easy at the start, when you have the fungin money = you dont feel any limits) you will fail very easily. One you start missing one resource, some buildings will not be maintained, so you will start missing more resources and it will snowball into game over.
So if you like the free sandbox games that lets you use your imagination to build anything you want, this may not be a game for you. If you like the games where you need to use your brain (and maybe even some spredsheets) this may be for you.

Actually I think I'd like the "survival" aspect of it. I don't do much city building but the one small game I got [Banished] had survival aspects to it ... if you weren't ready for WINTER they would wipe you out.
