You can sell your artifacts at the trader locations and you can get gold from diplomacy, and quests and after battles. It's part of the management that you manage where you spend your gold - you shouldn't build all upgrades and do all research if you need the gold to refill your army - or try to minimize the casualties.
 
There are also ways to make money out of quests long term, if you want. The two major ones are:
  • If you have allied with king Idris in act 3, you can also buy 6 random major artefacts for 9000 gold and sell them for around 12000 average every few months. This is on a fairly short timer.
  • If you have allied with lord Raymond, you can enter a joint venture with him earning 1000 gold/month (invest 6k, get 1k back per month for 10 months).

Finally, you can let time pass and whack wandering armies to earn enough money and gain artefacts to sell for even more money. Of course, this requires that you husband your troops carefully.
