It's hard as you may not get essential technologies early and will have to workaround the limitations, but you can also get powerful upgrades and wonders early. Breaks the monotony of always knowing what to build next IMO.

It sucks when you get all workshops as initial technologies though.

Yeah, but you can focus on making money fast to import the advanced resources, I did so in my current game to build the wonder concrete extractor (don't remember its name) around Sol 60 in a low concrete map.

What's really broken is getting Martian Copyrights early, you can outsource research like hell for tons of free money.
 
Try surviving as the church with only hydroponics and keep hoping that the RC explorer finds Soil Adaptation.
My current playthrough made me a mass murderer because I failed to supply them with food because I forgot that the church discount the productions of hydroponics.
Finally found low-g fungy, and now the faithfuls only eats veggies and fungies and imported foods.
