I love turn-based strategy games. One problem that I run into with almost every one that I have ever played, is AI placement at map generation. So, unlike most, I like to start on the largest map possible and only have a few enemy players(3-5). I do this because I want to experience the explore, research, build, etc, part of the game for awhile before bumping heads with the AI. This is almost an impossibe play style, as these games still shove the enemy AI right up your butt, even on a huge map.

Also, the game could use some sort of in-game information base, similar to civilopedia in the Civ series.

Are the spells in any kind of order for research or is it completely random which five you get to choose from to research?

The game seems to be pretty good so far. Hoping to pick up the DLC in the next week, so it isn't all negative.

You mustn't tick cylindrical world when creating the game. The different fractions are set at the borders of the map, but as there are no real borders on the map it puts youf for example at the right border and the AI on the left border which means you are right next to each other in that world type. Just tick flat world and that problem is solved.
There is a homepage http://warlockmota.wikia.com/wiki/Warlock:_Master_of_the_Arcane_Wiki I know it isn't as good as the ingame wiki of civ games but it's better than nothing. And I kind of like the developing of new monsters on the world which I've never seen before and just getting the little description to read. You form your own wiki in your mind.
There is kind of order in spell research, weaker spells you get at the beginning and stronger spells you get later into the game, but as far as I know there is no particular order. So I only research the spells I need most at the moment.

Hope I could help you.
