AoD 1.08 & Win8

Hi,
recently I've been forced to upgrade from Win7 to Win8 and, basically, I can't even stard AoD.
I've simply copied my previous installation folder to a directory under C:\Users\Pubblic (as I used to inside do Win7). I start the launcher but then I can't even pick a resolution (the drop-down menu is blank) or change language. Trying to launching the game has no effects.

I've already tried the various compatibility modes with no success.

Is there anything I can try do to?

Silly idea, but have you tried reinstalling it from scratch? You wrote that you just copied it to another directory. No experience about 8 (I've just switched to 7 since some weeks

) but maybe that's the issue...

Thanks for the advice, but I forgot to mention that I've tried a clean install already.

Apparently, however, my issue is relative to the launcher only: after manually editing the config file for resolution, language, ecc. I've been able to launch AoD by simply using its exe instead of the launcher.
Game feels a bit sloppy under Win8, but I have yet to try this solution.

Also, before actually clicking on your link, at first I thought the envisioned solution would have been a rollback to Win7

It is a bit sluggish even with the wrapper but at least it is playable, without it, it was like driving a robot on Mars. But it might be that my notebook is not exactly the fastest one. But I have not found any better solution anyway (without using another OS and using virtual machine was giving me even worse performance on that notebook). Would like to hear if that helped you.

And btw, copying entire folder without reinstallation works. Usually

The wrapper unfortunately made only a slight difference in performances.
I'm thinking about setting up multiboot & Win7 just for the sake of playing AoD properly.

Hello frukenpals,

Have you already tried running it in an administrator mode and/or compatibility mode? As for a virtual machine, often you will not reach the same performances as running it normally on your computer.

Might be a good idea in general. Win8 isn't quite ready for gaming yet. I'm currently running dual-boot with Ubuntu for work and Win7 for gaming. Keeping those separated is probably the better option for productivity :happy:

Yes & yes but there's no manifest difference regarding the performances.

And yeah, as I don't like virtual machines for gaming... dual-boot here I come.

Could you actually post a DxDiag of your system? I'm running AoD + Iron Cross myself and I was able to launch the game without any problems, neither did I have to use any compatibility modes. And also do I have Windows 8.

You can create a dxdiag by opening your start menu, or in case of Windows 8 you use the charm bar (mouse to the top right corner and slide down) then click on Search and type in DxDiag. Open the DxDiag program and wait until it finished loading all information, after that you click on save all information and save it to a place you can easily remember. When that's done you can open the file, copy the entire text and paste it in between [NOPARSE]

If I skip the launcher, the game starts actually; it's just really sluggish.

It looks like your drivers are out of date, I've to mention however that even on my GTX580 it is not running extremely smooth. I do recommend you though to update your drivers.

Thanks for the link: I updated right away the nVidia driver and forgot the Intel one.
Win8, a bit to my surprise, works amazingly well for everything I need to do on my PC: I'll just setup a multiboot with Win7 for AoD and a couple of other games that won't work on Win8.

Yup, it's a pretty long trend with MS that every second OS is complete and utter lossage, with the next one being usable and the even older one only falling out of use because it stops being supported. But at least they broke with the old tradition of even-numbered DirectX versions being completely braindead.

The purpose of my thread wasn't comparing different Windows versions, but to find a smooth working solution for AoD on Windows 8: given that the vast majority of new PCs come with Windows 8 pre-installed, the average user can't be expected to be able or willing to downgrade or multi-boot to be able to play a single game.

That said, I love AoD and multibooting isn't an issue at all for me so my issue is resolved, but it would be a little sad to see the amazing job done by developers and modders get somehow wasted because the game can't run properly on a new operating system.

I do not understand what the problems have to do with win 8 itself... I am running aod (with and withoud mods) on win 8. I even installed it just copying the folder... Everything works flawless without me tweaking anything!!!! My 50 cent go to 'driver &/or hardware problems'.
