I've just purchased AoD through steam, and downloaded it (and verified the files through steam). I'm on a Win7 64-bit machine. thus far I haven't been able to get to the main menu.

First up I was having trouble right after the initial video (and if I pressed the key to bypass it), so I renamed the avi directory as I saw suggested here somewhere.

Now I'm able to get to a screen that has a progress bar along the bottom and loads the various data aspects, ending up with a set of global variables (I believe). then I get a crash to desktop every time. Basically Win 7 tells me the application has closed and I have the choice between searching for a resolution through Microsoft (yeah right) or exiting.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Problem found

Doing a dxdiag prompted me to consider my system, and I've found what was causing my problem.

I have an RME Fireface 800 (a firewire external audio unit) which appears to windows as another audio device. I normally leave it on, but AoD seems to run fine if I turn it off. I assume this is because it isn't the sort of audio device AoD is expecting, and it can't work with it.

Ideally AoD should be able to ignore such a device, but I can well understand how that might not be the case.

I can still provide the dxdiag if it is useful, but I think this resolves the issue from my point of view.
