So I've been testing recently what happens when you cause civics to become invalid by shifting ethics. If anyone's interested I've written my observations in the civics page on the wiki, they're in the page intro.

My latest discovery has been more interesting. If you make Fanatic Purifiers invalid, for example by shifting ethics to Fanatic Militarist or Fanatic Spiritualist so Fanatic Xenophobe gets downgraded, the opinion penalty goes away. So you can 'take a break' from being Fanatic Purifiers until you feel like revealing your redemption was always a lie. It does cost you 5000 Unity each time though. And if you reform the government while the civic is inactive you lose the Minister of War Production but gain the Minister of State.

Oh no! Everyone hates me! :eek:

One ethics shift later ;)

Bonus points if you’re democratic and do this after a different faction gets elected

I have also done this a few times, it is fun.
There are some quirks, for example you can unfortunately not join the Galactic Commonwealth, it is just not possible.

That's really funny.

My other thing I like about fanatic purifiers is if you make other empires with your species you don't really have as many diplomatic issues with them and can join in federations with normal empires. Would be interesting to see if you can use this as a backdoor to joining the galactic empire.

Actually they must be Fanatic Purifiers too. In the past being the same species was enough but now they'll hate you too if they don't have the civic. I guess because it enabled a few exploits.

I think of an experiment that would be a bit funny to try.

I do not think this is practically possible, but in theory, you can switch ethics and invalidate the Purifier civic, and then get som alien migration pacts going.
Then after you get some aliens, you might spawn a Xenophile faction, and embrace it.
Now, you can perform the ultimate heresy and take Xeno-Compatibility.

Finally, you change back all the way into Fanatic Purifier again, and see what happen to all the heretic hybrid species you now have.

Casual Purifiers.

Can you still be friends with other same-species FP if you're on sabbatical but still have the FP civic?

No they don't they just need to be a player empire.

Oh yes, that works. I actually got the original Pacifist Achievement ("Every empire in the galaxy needs to be pacifist") by fanatic purifying the galaxy, then ethics shifting into pacifism.

Back when they added Ethics Shifting, they added a new type of civic check:
On top of "has_civic" they added "has_valid_civic", to check for this exact case.

The Imperialist and Xenophobe faction files are full of checks like
Code:
has_valid_civic = civic_fanatic_purifiers
Code:
NOT = { has_valid_civic = civic_fanatic_purifiers }

I guess they could add a penalty for just having the invalid civic as well? To showcase the worry of people that you might "relapse"?

No they don't they just need to be a player empire.
But you'll still have -1000 relations. It won't affect the way they act because it's only your opinion of them but it'll still prevent diplomatic actions from being proposed.
Casual Purifiers.

Same as above. You start hating them.

I've also tested if this unblocks the creation of subjects for purifiers. The good news is, it does. The bad news is, the subjects are created with no authority or ethics or civics. The game doesn't know how to handle incompatible combinations, I've had the same issue when I played as an egalitarian imperial.
