In a previous war against Incas, I sent a strong expeditionary corps into Inca lands (from the Atlantic coast).

After I captured the first province, I was unable to move further inland.
The IA kept sending crapy forces (very often just the 100 or 200 survivors from a previous combat) and sometimes but rarely not so crapy ; I never lost one combat, but everytime I met a crapy force, it stopped my progress into the other province and set me back in the starting province as if I had not moved at all.

I found this rather annoying, and after 25 years of war and revolts rising at home, I had to actually hand out 250d in order to get peace while I had never lost one combat and only that 'feature' prevented me from conquering more provinces.

Is this a bug or something normal ?
Is there a way around that problem ?

Use cavalry. Reorganize your troops and make cavalry a seperate unit. Then send it to take the next province. Army concisting only cavalry moves much faster then normal army, especially if you have cannons with the army as well.
If you're trying to explore the same time, it can be a bit tougher. Try putting conquistador with the cavalry, but it's wise to explore the region a bit before attaking.

Yes, this is a part of the problem :
- I had artillery (who goes to war without artillery)
- I had to explore to move into the next area

I did not think about going with cavalry only but would probably not have done so (too dangerous : faced by a large force, I could lose my conquistador), and anyway, the rate at which the Incas sent their crappy troops left little chance that even a cavalry force would succeed.

I believe there is kind of a bug involved here ; while I agree that I may be interrupted in my movement to another province, I don't see why I should have to start it all over again after a combat, especially very easy combats ; one could argue should the troops be at low morale ; but in that case, all combats were easily won.

Yves, I'm running into EXACTLY the same problem!! This is the most annoying thing I've ever seen in this game! Just when my conquistadors are about to move south out of Cajamarca, a little band of Incas appears and I have to fight them and then start moving all over again. It happened like 10 times in a row until I finally gave up. There is no other way for me to get through there! Did you figure it out? Is cavalry the answer? Does anybody have other suggestions?

This is a bug that needs to be fixed.

(Of course other than that, this game is AWESOME. Just gotta throw that in.)

AAARRRGGGHH!!!!

Same thing happened to me in Central Europe. I was attacking Thuringia and Sudeten at the same time, got both, then 2 peon Austrian forces ping-ponged back and forth between the two, effectively hemming in 2/3 of my army.

There should be a floor on engagements. Seriously, how are 200 cavalry going to engage an army of 20,000? You could make a case for guerilla warfare, but the most they could do would be to slow my army down (slightly, not for years). This and the invulnerable artillery are IMHO the only things that REALLY need fixed.

I believe there should be a fix such that when your army meets anything that is less that 10 or 20 times it's strength, it should :

- not stop moving
- destroy the opposing force completely
- and you should get a message saying your force met some futile resistance while moving...

(this is called overrun in wargames)

Good suggestion.

I second that.
