Summary
Armies reinforce during battlesDescription
Because of this, the soldier End of Battle + Dead + Wounded + Demoralized counts consistently add up to more than the soldier Start of Battle count. It seems to happen in every single battle to some degree, even during the retreat phase. I attached screenshots of two extreme examples. In one, an Austrian army had 72.4% more casualties / demoralized than its entire initial army size. In another, a New Grenadine army had 78.4% more.I also attached a third screenshot where I tried the same tactic on 1.8.7 and 1.9.6 and compared results. I started as Russia, declared war day 1 on Norway to Liberate Jan Mayen, then sent the stack of 45 troops to the front and did nothing else. I compared the numbers from the first three battles. On 1.8.7, the troop counts were pretty close, with gains of 0.5%-4.9% over the course of the battle. But on 1.9.6, the gains were much higher: 6.3% at the lowest to a whopping 20.9%, with the defending army in double digits each time.
I believe this is having severe effects on battle calculations. Defending armies that are being defeated often get a major "boost" from this that lets them turn the tide of a lost battle. I think this is at least partly responsible for the weirdly defender-friendly battle results people have reported in 1.9.x, e.g. here, here, here, and here.
Steps to reproduce
It can often be visually seen happening in the remaining troops counts during battles, or you can add up the End of Battle + Dead + Wounded + Demoralized counts at the end like I did.Game Version
1.9.6 (also tested on 1.9.5 and 1.9.0 - it's present on both, but not 1.8.7)OS
