No, not the one from "Holy Grail"...
I mean the "real" one...
Now, I am not an event writter or modder, hell, I don't even have CK yet
o but I am a history buff and I love the Arthurian era... if there was one (hedging my bets).
Anyhow, Ck seems like the right game for this scenario. The only question is, what would one base the scenario. Where thats where us historians come in handy.
You got quite a few choices:
Historical Arthur: Well, the commonly excepted view of Arthur now is that he was a Romano-British or Welsh war-leader who fought the Saxons in the late 5th or 6th century, explaining perhaps why Saxon expansion came to a halt until the 550's. If you go with this Arthur for the scenario, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the works of Nennius, and other ancient pre-Norman records will be your guide. The scenario would probably start circa 450 and Arthur and his family would be dukes in either Wales or Western England. Yet, this would be the hard scenario to do since there are so few written records of this period. Another good book on the historical Arthur is "The Discovery of King Arthur" by Geoffery Ashe in which he concludes Arthur and the shadowy mid-5th century historical figure of Riothamus are one and the same.
Monmounth's Arthur: You could base the scenario around the Arthur described in the high middle ages best seller, "The History of the Kings of Britain" by Geoffery of Monmouth. This norman author spent chapter after chapter on the story of Arthur and claimed that all he wrote was true, coming from an old Celtic book a Bishop friend of his had given him. Sounds like a likely story.
Anyhow, most of the familiar characters of the Arthur legend are in this work, except for Lancelot. Arthur is the illegit son of Uther Pendragon but it would be best to start the scenario after he has been acclaimed legit and war leader of the Britons (or he could be legit as a child, thus skipping over that part of the tale). Geoffery also includes the Western Roman empire among Arthur's laundry list of enemies, headed by the consul Lucius. This could be a very interesting scenario and you would only have to use one source.
Mallory's Arthur: The paramount work of the Arthur legend (in english, at least) is Thomas Mallory's Mort D'arthur (Lancelot included). This would also make a great scenario, but it would be, by far, the least historical.
Comments, Questions? I'm sure hundreds are waiting for such a scenario, right?
