Wait, here's a plot twist: We don't get one but TWO new IP's announced at gamescon!

Well it is kind of surprising to create a hint singeling out one of the several options in order to say it's not that one. Especially by doing it by focussing on one small aspect of that game just like the did with EUIV the other way around.

Rome 2 is discussed a lot in these forums and every time PDS have any kind of live interaction with the fans. It wouldn't be a huge stretch for them to feel the need to single it out, whether for good or bad.

They've made it perfectly clear it is a new IP, which clearly ruled out Vic 3, but to many that doesn't rule out a new games based around Rome, so that again could have made them think it was important to mention it.

I wouldn't mind a Rome game, but I don't think the hints have been suggesting that.

EDIT:

This actually reminds me of a recent thread in the EU4 forum, where Wiz pointed out that whilst the most discussed and even popular, country in the forum was Byzantium, the actual statistics from the game showed that very few people played as it.

We have to keep in mind that the player base for PDS' most successful games reaches far beyond the small number of people on this forum.

At this point, if there is no denial from Paradox about the Stellaris speculation, it seems pretty obvious that it will be augustus... another space game in an already saturated market, while there is no good ancient age strategy games except the TW and a few city builders... I'm going to sound selfish and cynical, but I hope that Stellaris will be a commercial failure so that Paradox goes back to grand strategy historical games.

If it is a failure, then they will have less money to invest in development and we'll likely just have to wait longer for the next game from them. They would also be more likely to focus on the more successful franchises, so Vic 3 would happen before a Rome 2.
