I saw somebody mention the possibility of a succession game which got me to thinking...

Here is my idea of hopefully the first of many of these sorts of AARs for Aurora. My aim is to have a succession game with a political roleplay element.

Story

Two centuries have passed since humanity nearly wiped itself out through the misuse of some nanotechnology known to history as the nanoplague. Fourty years prior to the game start date humanity started to reconnect and established what we know now as Solarian civilization out of the unique fragments of humankind's greatest catastrophe. Long story short we all realized we needed to band together to survive and prosper again which we did formally in the establishment of the Solarian Directive.

Its twenty two years on and our emerging civilization is finally ready to expand to the stars and this is where we start.

Our civilization

Lets talk about what common aspects our peoples share that makes us a civilization.

Although the nanoplague nearly eradicated us, many of our ancestors held enough of our high technology to form advanced self-sufficient nanogoo defended cities avoiding contact with others fearing destruction. Most of these cities developed unique cultures of their own and lived quite a high standard of life. Most also developed a high regard for scientists, inventors, and military figures.

So we're a technocratic society with respect for authority figures but many of these cities managed to sustain democracies and republics which is an important influence on our government. This plays well with how the game has you direct research initiatives instead of the private sector, our polity holds the technological progress of our society as a high priority enough so to control it.

Literature and art has been rather gloomy given the circumstances but in the past thirty years there has been a movement toward Solarian identity in the arts. Writers and artists have also become more positive about the future but we have our token Voltaires and George Carlins hanging around. If you want your character could be a writer, artists, or philosopher and help roleplay our culture but they must also be a member of the assembly. We didn't lose much or any knowledge of our past during the disaster due to our hightech so we still have Nietsche, postmodernism, and hip hop.

The government

Here's the nitty gritty of the game.

The directive is an absolute democracy similar to Ancient Athens. The members of the assembly simply need enough geneprints (signatures...) to be accepted/elected into the body. There can only be 450,000 members of the assembly, the players are the most influential members of this body and there what they vote for represents large portions of what the rest of the body will vote for.

Now the structure of our government is as follows:

President of the Directive [head of the state] [elected for 5 year terms by majority vote, unlimited term limit]

-Plays the game
-Possesses considerable power but requires Assembly approval for treaties, declarations of war, and budgets
-Responsible for posting roleplay posts describing gameplay experience
-Elected from the Assembly

Assembly of the Directive [members must repeatedly update their geneprint database every 3 years with renewed geneprints to maintain their membership inthe assembly]

-Approves treaties, declarations of war, and budgets.
-It may be prudent for the president to seek advice from the assembly during other critical moments.
-Can make proposals to the president that can be approved or ignored to the detriment of either party.

Popularity and Political Parties

Unlike Ancient Athens, political parties have become commonplace and entrenched in the Assembly as members manage to hold on to their positions for greater and greater lengths of time. You are not required to be part of a party but you will probably remain powerless if you dont.

To establish a political party you need the following exactly:

Name: x
Platform: x
Member list: you need at least 4 other confirmed members to be considered an official party.

What I imagine is that your player character whether it be an admiral, diplomat, or governor can depending on in game achievements elevate the chances of a party to win elections. For example having an admiral who defeats an alien armada threatening Earth could easily win you the presidential election.

Interestingly if your guy becomes president he can send his party's characters to do prestige earning tasks to help win the next election. But if they lose a battle or screw up a treaty it could be hell to pay.

This is where popularity comes into play, the citizens of our Directive vote for the President and I will be constantly maintaining popularity ratings of the parties among the people raising and lowering them as I see fit based off what happens in the game. I'll be sure to explain in detail the interests and concerns of the people as well.

I would like to hear your opinions on what i've posted so far.

I was wondering when this was going to happen.

I'll watch this with interest. I won't have time to play myself though, since every little free moment will be dedicated to my own game. :)
I could be a member of the Assembly though, without aspirations to becoming President.

Here's my geneprint: 98b0a25b9b64191a27eff574ac9c46d2

I'd love to play once I get back from vacation ;-)

Oh my, not sure if I can really commit into long term project such as this is bound to be but, ah well, might be worth a try, I suppose even the president can 'abdicate' if he becomes too busy to continue...

Weird additional succestion;
Let scientists pick their own projects, and assembly will decide which of them gets how much funding (ie. more than one research lab for their project), more randomness and possibly challenge

Short History: The arrival of the Slugs in the fall of 2035 meant first contact with a xenosophont civilization and since every action has an equal and opposite reaction it also meant the beginning of the tragic history of humankind. They were of course more powerful and advanced than our ancestors. Our conventional weapons were no match for their beam weaponry and the air war ended within three months in a trilogy of battles referred to by one lyrical artist* of the era as the "cloud campaign". The conflict on the ground lasted a decade longer in the bloddiest war fought by humankind.

It was strange though that we lasted even that long and it is now commonly believed by expert and commonperson alike that these aliens were an unoriginal species that possessed weapons and technology from a patchwork of sources. They had few vehicles for planetary combat and were only a few generations ahead of humankind in small arms technology. Eventually were were able to reverse engineer captured arms and utilize it all against them. But for our advantages on the ground we were pulverized by the beam cannons and ordenance of their giant shielded warships. It was then of course the best day of my life when we saw their ships withdrawal from our skies and space never to return.

The prisoners we had provided us everything they knew through their translator machines. We learned about trans-newtonian physics and some ways to exploit it that allowed us to rebuild our species and make the first steps into a permenent existence in space. The prisoners were alergic to our atmosphere and promptly died soon after spilling their shelled guts.

Humankind as history informs us is a tragicly violent and self-destructive species. After ten years of death and destruction on a scale known only in dreams of psychopaths we had not lost our appetites for it. The remnents of humanity banded into city-states and various other factions hoping to lobby the newly formed Earth Sphere government toward their ideas of progress and utopia. This period is typically referred to by experts in era naming as the Unification Era and it was sparingly bloody and sometimes brutal but not so much as to destroy us only enough to narrow our eyes toward the universe. The various isolated states of Earth survived off mastering technology and mobilizing their people to arms more efficiently. Technocratic republics and despotisms alike emerged from this chaos tough and ready for anything. But through the shrewdness of the founding fathers we were brought together under the Directive giving all of humankind new hope and confidence allowing us to move forward.

The current date is September 13th, Revival Year [RY] 43 and nearly a half century after the foundation of the Solarian Directive humankind is prepared to make its first step into the vacumn.

Solarian Civilization: Almost sixty years onward mindkind [humans and machines so far] Solarian culture a term itself invented only in the previous few decades is a conglomeration of customs, aesthetics, and ideas rising fromt he ruins of the ancient polities. Predominent through the whole is a strain of Americanism that is a love of mass media, popular culture, and rugged individualism among other things fueled by the private market. Even with the old United States gone their influence reaches into the future. Ancient religions although still around with some following are quickly becoming extinct beign replaced by AI worship and existential based philosophies.

Literature although originally meant to mean a work of art via written words has become a general term for stories published in virch [virtual reality] form although books are still produced and read widely by electronic means. Postmodernism still reigns but only by default as literature and other art forms have become too divere to classify in categories. Some influential strains in literature and art include transhumanism, virch experiences, and existential pieces. New genres of music often associated with virch sensory stimulation is common with song stories played out in the minds of the participant.

I'll develop this more.

Government:

Constitution of the Solarian Directive

I'm just going to dramatically paraphrase for you. All sentient beings that suffer are granted the typical rights of a free society such as freedom to express your opinion, demonstrate, and elect leaders [the idea of natural rights are considered absurd concepts, Solarians believe rights must be protected and nurtured or they won't exist]. The bill of rights of the Directive is the Declaration of the Rights of Sentient Beings and they are no held to be universal they are simply ideals held by Solarians and granted to all those who are citizens of the Directive.

The President of the Directive plays the game and so they possess considerable influence over the course of the Directive. They are elected to 5 year terms and can be reelected and unlimited number of times. The Assembly elects the president.

Their powers and duties are as follows:
I. Commander-in-chief, must obtain permission by the Assembly to declare war though
II. Can maintain a cabinet and delegate certain aspects of the game like ship design, research, etc to cabinet members [many of us are inexperienced so it might be wise to have other players design our ships for example if the president isnt any good at it]
III. Can veto any legislation or proposal made by the Assembly
IV. Responsible for making treaties with other civilizations which must be approved by the Assembly
V. Must protect Solarian citizens everywhere
VI. All other actions and decisions must be approved by the Assembly
VII. Must have a budget approved every three years.

The Assembly of the Directive acts as the legislative and representative body for the Directive. All players play as members of this Assembly no matter what but being a absolute democracy the Assembly is made up of military figures, philosophers, businessmen, and common citizens. Each player will be given a random popularity rating that represents their popularity with the people of the Directive. If a player's popularity goes below 30 they will be forced to leave the game representing their removal from the Assembly. There are no elections for Assembly members, through the technology of the time constant calculations are done through advanced opinion polls and such so its whenever you go below 30 that you "lose".

Their powers and duties are as follows:
I. Is the only approval authority for legislation/proposals
II. Elects the President of the Directive
III. Must approve declarations of war, treaties, and budgets
IV. Can amend the constitution
V. Responsible for dealing justice for political crimes

Popularity and the Public

Every player gets a popularity rating ranging from 40 to 60 at random. Gains and subtractions will be made influenced by your roleplay posts and the happenings of the game.

I will also represent the masses and regulary post their concerns and opinions.

Character Creation

Name: x
Age: x (doesnt really matter except in terms of history since Solarians are eternally youthful through advanced biological technology, they can still die from an outside force though]
