I saw somebody mention the possibility of a succession game which got me to thinking...
Here is my idea of hopefully the first of many of these sorts of AARs for Aurora. My aim is to have a succession game with a political roleplay element.
Story
Two centuries have passed since humanity nearly wiped itself out through the misuse of some nanotechnology known to history as the nanoplague. Fourty years prior to the game start date humanity started to reconnect and established what we know now as Solarian civilization out of the unique fragments of humankind's greatest catastrophe. Long story short we all realized we needed to band together to survive and prosper again which we did formally in the establishment of the Solarian Directive.
Its twenty two years on and our emerging civilization is finally ready to expand to the stars and this is where we start.
Our civilization
Lets talk about what common aspects our peoples share that makes us a civilization.
Although the nanoplague nearly eradicated us, many of our ancestors held enough of our high technology to form advanced self-sufficient nanogoo defended cities avoiding contact with others fearing destruction. Most of these cities developed unique cultures of their own and lived quite a high standard of life. Most also developed a high regard for scientists, inventors, and military figures.
So we're a technocratic society with respect for authority figures but many of these cities managed to sustain democracies and republics which is an important influence on our government. This plays well with how the game has you direct research initiatives instead of the private sector, our polity holds the technological progress of our society as a high priority enough so to control it.
Literature and art has been rather gloomy given the circumstances but in the past thirty years there has been a movement toward Solarian identity in the arts. Writers and artists have also become more positive about the future but we have our token Voltaires and George Carlins hanging around. If you want your character could be a writer, artists, or philosopher and help roleplay our culture but they must also be a member of the assembly. We didn't lose much or any knowledge of our past during the disaster due to our hightech so we still have Nietsche, postmodernism, and hip hop.
The government
Here's the nitty gritty of the game.
The directive is an absolute democracy similar to Ancient Athens. The members of the assembly simply need enough geneprints (signatures...) to be accepted/elected into the body. There can only be 450,000 members of the assembly, the players are the most influential members of this body and there what they vote for represents large portions of what the rest of the body will vote for.
Now the structure of our government is as follows:
President of the Directive [head of the state] [elected for 5 year terms by majority vote, unlimited term limit]
-Plays the game
-Possesses considerable power but requires Assembly approval for treaties, declarations of war, and budgets
-Responsible for posting roleplay posts describing gameplay experience
-Elected from the Assembly
Assembly of the Directive [members must repeatedly update their geneprint database every 3 years with renewed geneprints to maintain their membership inthe assembly]
-Approves treaties, declarations of war, and budgets.
-It may be prudent for the president to seek advice from the assembly during other critical moments.
-Can make proposals to the president that can be approved or ignored to the detriment of either party.
Popularity and Political Parties
Unlike Ancient Athens, political parties have become commonplace and entrenched in the Assembly as members manage to hold on to their positions for greater and greater lengths of time. You are not required to be part of a party but you will probably remain powerless if you dont.
To establish a political party you need the following exactly:
Name: x
Platform: x
Member list: you need at least 4 other confirmed members to be considered an official party.
What I imagine is that your player character whether it be an admiral, diplomat, or governor can depending on in game achievements elevate the chances of a party to win elections. For example having an admiral who defeats an alien armada threatening Earth could easily win you the presidential election.
Interestingly if your guy becomes president he can send his party's characters to do prestige earning tasks to help win the next election. But if they lose a battle or screw up a treaty it could be hell to pay.
This is where popularity comes into play, the citizens of our Directive vote for the President and I will be constantly maintaining popularity ratings of the parties among the people raising and lowering them as I see fit based off what happens in the game. I'll be sure to explain in detail the interests and concerns of the people as well.
I would like to hear your opinions on what i've posted so far.
