Let's start with something you probably don't know yet. I had a game to waste before restarting so I autoresolved a bunch of battles using all my fleets to test stuff and noticed that when you autoresolve:

- Your ships never surrender, always get sunk instead. I never saw my ship status to be set to surrender, even if it survived with 10 hull left.
- You never board any ships. I never won any ship from AI.
- Your captain doesn't get any experience. EVER. Seriously, not even a star from multiple battles.
- Your ships don't get combat stars. Not even one star popped up after a bunch of fights.

I suppose devs wanted to encourage us to fight more on tactical screen (like we needed encouragement:))... the problem is that this means we have to fight even small fights ourselves to avoid losing valuable ships.

My proposal is to (at least):

- Unblock white flag for autoresolve so ships can surrender when hull is very damaged. This way if you win the battle, you keep the ship. Make it 25% chance for example to surrender and not be sunk.

- Also experience, instead of not getting any at all, how about halving it for ships and captains? To get at least some points out of that fight. Captain experience is already very hard to come by...

You forgot that ships never escape.

I believe that curent state of "auto resolve" will prevent any kind of campaign multiplayer, since it would have to revolve around it. So unless it will change to acomadate all kind of outcomes including escape, capture, etc., I see no way to have any kind of campaign multiplayer especially with more than one player.

Thanks Kim! :)

What a wonderful idea. The new patch should make auto resolve more game friendly and useful. Please add a way to gain experience and upgrades for autoresolve.

I have serious doubts if there even will be a new patch before Privateer.

I wish they patched at least the memleak that causes autosave to take minutes, it's the thing that made me stop playing. I can't either sit and wait for auto-save before each battle and on every year change for a few minutes... or restart my game every 4 game years. :-|

Features like those pre-battle options Kim Soares mentioned a few posts ago are better put in the add-on where they can be thoroughly tested and balanced.

I have not noticed any delay in auto save or at the start of the year. Takes about a second to auto save and I've not noticed anything at the yearly change. It might not be a leak everyone has. My complaint is no one seems to play MP. Very dead mp and I'd of thought it would be the main attraction like Call of Juarez, but it's not.:(.....opps, I was wrong, I do get a hic-cup in the game at the start of the year, but it's just for a second or 2.

I also have very little delay in autosave. It may depend on your hardware and specs ,Ram, etc. I would like to see experience granted in autoresolve as well as the ability to flee from a much stronger enemy. I would use the Empire at War or Rome Total War as the model for experience and autoresolve. It would make a more fair and balanced game play for those like me who are more strategically inclined.
My specs:
EVGA X58 SLI Bios SZ2L
Intel Core 7 I920 2.67 MHZ
6GB Corsair Dominator 1600
Creative Titanium XFI
EVGA Geoforce 8800GTS 320MB
WD 150 GB
Maxtor 190GB
Samsung Syncmaster 226BW
Vista 32 bit Home Premium
NVidia 190.62 WHQL
Intel chipset 9.1.1014

I have no delay on autosave or the year end.

As far as autoresolve goes, I love it! I do not think you
should be able to level up ship captains by letting the computer
instantly fight pitched battles. It trivializes a key aspect of
the game. The current autoresolve lets you quickly resolve
battles where you have no chance of losing which is the
whole point of autoresolve. If your ships may need to flee
or you want to board the enemy then you shouldn't be using
autoresolve to begin with!

It works very well for what it was intended for. Please do not
change it!

I for one have absolutely no interest in fighting battles myself since I'm a strategic player and not a tactical enthusiast. I don't see why it would bother you if they implement a more useful autoresolve for those of us that don't care for tactical battles. Nobody is forcing you to use it, so you can just continue to fight your battles yourself.

I'm not asking for an autoresolve that is as good as a human choosing to fight himself, but it would be nice to have some of the above mentioned features implemented.

Me too. There are times when the forces involved wont be enough fun to play out at tactical level. Surely it is better to have a better auto resolve and satisfy everyone. Like rasmus40 says, it wont be compulsory.

I AGREE 100%! Paradox forums are the best. I still conquer the world in EU3.

I know that this is an old thread, but I'm fuming. I auto resolved for the first time, because wife wanted something. I lost 4 SOL 46's to a gaggle of schooners, including a full load of silver.Never Again !

The general problem with tactical battles in most strategic games is that it horribly unbalances the games. Most game companies can't be bothered to write an AI that can win 2 out of 3 rounds with a paper sack. Thus, tactical battles usually massively tilt play-balance towards a human player, as the human player usually is much smarter than the tactical AI.

So, in most strategic games, I tend to play with whatever the local equivalent of 'Auto-Resolve". If you like playing strategic games, its usually more of a challenge. At least its more of a fair fight of my village idiot commanding my army against your village idiot commanding your army.

So, now I've had two campaign games ruined by this incredibly bad Auto-Resolve. Apparently, you lose all battles in Auto-Resolve.

I had one game ruined when a sqaudron of 2 Cutters and a Schooner were all sunk by a Pirate Galleon. What the heck? Cutters and a Schooner can sail circles around a Galleon. There's no way they should all be sunk. I'd be surprised if they captured the Galleon, but the Galleon simply can't hurt them if they don't want to be hurt, as it can't possibly catch them. They should be able to outrun the Galleon to downwind and sail to points upwind that a Galleon couldn't think of sailing towards.

So, great, I've got a masochistic captain who likes to be hurt.

Then, I started another Campaign game. This time, I took a mission to deal with some Pirates. I sent a fleet of 3 Cutters and a Schooner. The Pirates turned out to be 2 Cutters. The friggin out-numbered 2:1 Pirates sunk my whole fleet.

Village idiot was too kind.

So, at the core of the game, you can either take pride if beating the other companies village idiot in tactical battles, or you can watch your fleet Auto-Sink on Auto-Resolve.

Not to mention apparently crippling auto-resolve by not letting ships or commanders get experience.

This game is a piece of junk.

I thought Total War the only game stupid enough not to offer a strategic multiplayer option. Can't believe another company was that bad. If all someone wants is a multiplayer tactical battle simulator for this era, there are better ones around already.
