I just purchased Arsenal of Democracy from Gamersgate. The first time the game tried to do an autosave, I got the following error message: "Couldn't open file: scenarios\save games\autosave.eug". I checked the save games directory and, sure enough, there is no autosave.eug game there. I'm assuming that I can solve this problem by creating the autosave.eug file. The question I have though is, does the game expect to find any special formatting in the file, or can I take any old text file and rename it "autosave.eug"?

I tried creating an autosave.eug file by renaming a text file, but got the same message. I also noticed that the game doesn't keep any of my settings. For example, I moved the music control slider to zero, but when I started the game again, it was at a hundred. Likewise, it failed to retain my settings for game speed, difficulty, etc. If I recall correctly from the original Hearts of Iron game, it should have retained those settings.

What patch are you on? And what install directory did you use? I would suggest both:
- Installing into a non-default directory (as Program Files is treated differently on Vista and Windows 7 machines compared to non-OS directories)
- Patching up to the latest 1.06 beta patch, available in the tech forums section, as 1.05 did have some save game issues.

I have the same problem, but I purchased it via Steam, so I'm not really sure that I can move it. As for running it as an administrator, where is that option? I'm on a laptop and I'm the only user so I'm the default administrator for every other application.

The inability to save is a known problem of the Steam 1.05 version. You need to find the Steam folder/directory, then the AoD game sub folder, then the scenarios subfolder inside the AoD game folder. Enter scenarios and create a new subfolder named "save games" and you should be able to save.
Running game as Admin (Vista/7): find the aodgame.exe (with file extensions hidden it's just aodgame), right-click and select "Run as Administrator".

It now runs flawlessly. Thank you for taking the time to explain to me what the problem was and how to solve it.

I would like to thank you as well: I had not been able to find out until know. If i could give a award of some sort to you I would

Just wanted to say thanks to Denniss for troubleshooting this, as I hit the same problem. The Run as Administrator worked.

Its not only a steam problem...I use a Gamersgate version and just came across this problem
When using win7 with AoD installed into Programs it seems irrelevant if the game is run as administrator or not...the save function will not be allowed to access the folder due to win7 architecture and the implemented file protection system.
The problem is easily resolved by opening the program folder and move th AoD install folder by drag and drop to another location...another file path could be C/:Games/AoD for example....then there will be no further problems...just remember to delete the old shortcut and create a new one
Said that I would not recommend to install any game into programs folder under Win7 as this will bring problems.
