So I was thinking of making a game about A:TLA and/or Legend of Korra. I only have a vague idea about how it would look like but it would involve playing as the major rulers and other high-ranking people (including the Avatar). The different nations and characters within them would compete/cooperate with each other for power, glory, political change, bending mastery, whatever you can think of. Players would get traits and different benders would have different skills.

Any interest in this? I always thought the politics and the power structures in this world were interesting but the shows don't really delve too deeply into them because they are for kids (though Korra does a pretty good job of it at points and the Ba-Sing-Se arc in A:TLA is excellent). I figure in a forum game the more "adult" angles of this world could really be explored.

I am not really sure what time period would work best. LOK era has the most interesting politics but A:TLA has the life and death struggle of the 100 years' war. It might even be better to pick a time outside of the two shows so that people could have more freedom to RP and make their own characters. I am open to suggestions to what people think would be best.

Yes. But my preference would be limited to A:LA as its the more interesting time frame for me as it sort of strays away from industrialization and isn't limited by it as a backdrop.

Edit: Coming from a person who doesn't know much about both series but A:LA looks more appealing in the above aspects.

What if instead it was a different time frame within the series than those covered in the two shows? For instance in the Legend of Korra we see the life of the first avatar, who dies being unable to fulfill his desire to bring peace. There is a huge time gap between him and all the other avatars we've seen mentioned that could allow for players to be more creative than simple role play, while fun, of characters from the show. If you don't take this idea then I'm totally doing Toph because she's amazing >.>

Right now I am leaning toward a pre-Korra date.

I am thinking about how to combine controlling a nation state like WiR and the personal ineractions and character RP of an IAAR. What would you guys prefer?

I was thinking about doing a date right before the Hundred Years' War so that we could be close to the world of the shows but still have a lot of freedom to role-play and maneuver.

I'm interested in such a game.

You could combine nation games with character games by making so that you have an entire nations stats and character substats of who run that nation who will reflect the internal intrigue while the nation stats will be more or less what projects outward.

You could also try to have a feudal system set up, one in which the nation is split among several different players. An example would be to have the cities of Taku and Omashu ruled by players under another player who rules as the Earth King.

I actually had this exact same idea for the Earth Kingdom. The "Earth army" would be split among different players who each control a locality, much like a feudal monarchy. Meanwhile, the Fire Lord would have direct control of the Fire Army and the rest of the players would be generals and members of the royal family.

The slight problem is that the Water and Air Nations are slightly dull in this regard compared to Fire and Earth. The two Water chiefs are each advised by councils, so I guess players could be the chiefs and the councillors? Maybe Air Nation could be the heads of the temples (provided it still exists in the start date we use).

In my early draft the forms of government would be:

Fire- Absolute Monarchy
Earth- Feudal Monarchy
Northern Water- Limited Monarchy (chiefdom is a hereditary monarch who is heavily influenced by council, so basically a con-mon before a constitution)
Southern Water- Tribal Elective
Air- theocratic confederation

Fire Nation would get a bonus for industrialization. Each nation would receive armies and an "elite" type of unit. Nations could have resources but the Water and Air economies are a bit mystifying.

I like the idea of ck-like traits that can help with personal combat (which is obviously a big thing in this world) and act as modifiers for your nation/region's economy and army.

Aren't the Water economies mainly based on fishing and hunting, while the Air economy seems more agrarian? But all of this sounds good the only issue would probably be stats with this.

I believe the air nomads are just that, nomads. Their economy would most likely be centered around air bison, with the temples acting as semi-permanent cities. Perhaps the temples were set up to protect grazing land for the bison?

Air and NWT will probably get strong defensive modifiers to make up for their primitive economies and minuscule pops.

Here was what I was thinking with pre-war pop stats (which would determine how many soldiers you can have)

Fire- 50 mil
Earth- 200 mil
NWT- 3 mil
SWT- 250k
Air- 50k

I am basing the Fire and Earth pops on 19th century Japan and China. I am probably overestimating the Water Nation but I don't want them to be totally dwarfed.

Fire Nation would have a smaller but more advanced military than Earth and an economic advantage from industrialization.

Seems quite sound.

Ok, I'm gonna open a vote. What time period would you prefer?

A. Pre-Hundred Years' War (Avatar Roku and Sozin are friends)
B. Start of war (Roku dies, Sozin launches war, RIP airbenders?)
C. Ozai's Ascension (Ozai inherits throne through shady means, begins to prepare for final stages of war)
D. Aang Awakens
E. Legend of Korra

D. I feel this option has the most openness to it as to how things can go.

Either A or D.

A- We still have Airbenders around and Roku might be able to steer Sozin away from war or vice-versa.

D- When the show started, things could go crazy pretty quick.

A.

We still have air benders, and it would be interesting to see what might happen, if a hundred year war would even start or if it could be aborted.
