These songs will not be to everyone's taste, for there is little variation among them, all of them containing the same words, such as : hero, knight, horseman, galley slave, serpent, dragon, wolf, lion, falcon, eagle, falcon's nest and sword, sabres, lances... necklets, medallions, decrees, heads chopped off, slaves carried away, etc. May those who find them pleasing sing them; may those who do not, go off to sleep.

Now onto the AAR...
Ahistory.jpg

I: Beginnings
The great Caucasus mountains crossed the Kingdom of Georgia like a great spine, stretching from the eastern edge of the Black Sea and ending at the Caspian. The mountains made life hard, bringing frequent earthquakes, the rain it brings drowns the crops on the southern tip, while leaving the north begging for water.

Those who live around the mountains, mostly Georgians, Turks, and Alans, range the grasslands, farming, herding, and partaking in any matter that might mean for their survival. In times of Famine, a period when most peasants drop left and right and nobles hoard their grain, the Turks fled to the south, as they were natural-nomads, the Alans did the same, but their eyes set north, yet the Georgians stayed, facing death with a smile and a high-spirit.

Their Kings were no better. Seldom did they fret, though the whispers of Turkish expansion brought froth beads of sweat on the foreheads of the most cowardly, and even less did they fear, though this may be the downfall of the kings to come...

Among the Georgian Kings the line that ran the strongest, dating back to days of King David and hailing from the Holy Land itself; the Bagrationi now rule the fledgling Kingdom of Georgia, and aim to thrall their enemies and claim their lands for the people of Georgia!

But first they must be wary of the larger foes that lurk mighty Caucasus... To the south, at the edge of the desert, are the Seljuk Turks, swarthy nomads that have taken themselves as Kings and rightful rule of all they can crush!

Directly west of the Turks the crumbling Byzantine Empire. Though their time has come, the archaic, backwards Empire still holds much clought and could sure crush the Georgians if they wished to, but their attention is fixed on preserving their cities fro the Turks.

North of the Caucasus are the Cumans. Like the Turks they are nomads pantomiming themselves as kings of all lands north of Black and Caspian Seas. While they stand united as a 'kingdom' their alliance is loose and only a small fire can light the oil of treachery that soaks their diplomatic efforts.

And around the Caucasus itself? Groups of many small principalities, emirates, sheikdoms, and tribal confederations that beg to be united under the Georgian standard. Only time will tell how long this will take...

But first proper introductions must be made! The current King Of Georgia, and count of numerous provinces:

KingBagrat.jpg

First and foremost Bagrat Bagratuni (actually Bagrat IV) is a Knight, not just a warrior. He follows a strict code of ethics that is only bested for his devotion to the clergy and preservation of his faith. At home, in the mountains, he rules with a fair, although somewhat biased, hand, favouring the poor and clergy over the flamboyant Burghers and haughty nobles. However, he is not stupid and knows that he must appease both of these classes or face a revolt.

His first act as a King was to quickly declare war against the Sheik of Kartli, a small province south of Kakheti. However, in his pious rush he had forgotten to consult his diplomatic advisers, who would have told him that the Sheikdom of Kartli was allied with the Emirate of Derbent, a formidable opponent for the growing Kingdom!

By the end of the year the armies of Georgia were mobilised and headed for Kakheti; their numbers totalled little over 2000. Their ally, the Principality of Alania, joins them in the war against the Emirate of Derbent and the Sheikdom of Kartli.

MarchtoKartli.jpg

Sometime during January the Georgian army reaches Kartli, however the Chiefdom of Kasogs, another small province north of Imeretia, declares war against the Kingdom of Georgia, thinking that all the forces have left the kingdom.

February the Georgian forces are split between two fronts, 2000 or so north combating the Alan forces of Kasogs while the rest, a rather meager force of 1500, south fighting off the combined efforts of Derbent and Kartli. The army in Kartli beats of the Kartli forces while Bagrat confronts Buurgar, the Chief of Kasogs, in Imeretia.

By summer, however, the few victories won are soon forgotten because battle after battle is lost to the well-rested and superior in number armies of Derbent. Realising that he is in over his head Bagrat calls for peace with the Emirate of Derbent, by late July both nations agree on a white peace.

At home, however, the situation could not be worse.

Wild rumours have been flying around that Mariam Bagratuni, the daughter of Bagrat, was becoming visibly pregnant! Now under normal situations this would have been perfectly fine, but Mariam was not married and had no plans to do so! Faced with her duty as Chancellor and thus chief representative of her country Mariam was faced with one of two decisions; rid herself of the tumour with hair and teeth or give birth to the baby and flee to a foreign court.
As much as the first of the two was pleasing to her, Mariam was a devout Christian and knew the right thing to do...

Giorgi Bagratuni is born later that winter

Also during that winter Kasogs falls to Bagrat's army.
The war with Derbent had been simmering in Bagrat's mind. He did not like losing to a loose collection of Muslim states, nor did he like Muslims for that matter... He was told that the war, however, had not ceased for their allies, the Principality of Alania.

Since the summer of 1067 the Principality had been fighting the war, and for the most part losing it. The Emirate of Derbent had claimed Semender, and reclaimed Derbent and Albania, and were pushing north into the Principality's lands.

Seeing this not only as an opportunity to help his ally, but also his kingdom, Bagrat drew up his war council and they quickly decided on their plan to crush the weakened Emirate.

Council.jpg

When the summer began its descent into autumn Georgian armies, lead by Giorgi, stormed and captured Derbent, while Bagrat marched north to help their allies.

As the summer dragged on Giorgi won battle after battle, making his way down the western coast of the Caspian. However the war plunged the kingdom into debt and the nobles, fearful of their dwindling wealth, requested that an Estates General be called so a proper plan may be drafted and implemented that will rid debt from the country. Bagrat, letting his pride get the best of him, denies the request and continues to fight the war "poor if needed be."

When autumn arrives so does a message from the Sheikdom of Albania, they are declaring war against the Kingdom of Georgia! The Albania's claim that it is their duty to help their Muslim brothers against the Orthodox Onslaught.

The first major defeat is suffered by winter at the hands of the Albanian Army who intercepted Bagrat's Army in Derbent. The Albanian's begin to siege Derbent and by July of 1089 the province is lost.

Later that summer a peace treaty is signed with the Albanians, who are keep their claims to Derbent. The Emirate of Derbent, who have recovered from their previous losses and were beginning to push back Giorgi's Army, accept a white peace.

Bagrat's Reign, Cont.
KingBagrat.jpg

When the new year dawned so did the unrest of the Georgian citizens. Specifically the Burghers in Abkhazia, who demanded that the clergies power be decreased.
Buhergersdemand-AsakbaoziaSP.jpg

During normal situations Bagrat would have seen the Burgher's reasons; most feared the rampant debt in the province that was only encouraged by the moneylenders (who made their 'presence' known late last year). However Bagrat had just lost a war, and was willing to take little complaints from his subjects. To make matters worse they had demanded that the church be tossed aside in favour of gold.
"How can these people dare ask for power over the church when they themselves sit on the fringes of Paganism?!"
This much was true as not too far to the north were the Cumans, who worshipped all manners of false idols.
He decided, instead, to increase the power of the clergy, giving them 50% of control in the province.

Spring signifies the marriage between Bagrat's daughter, Mariam, and a distant relative of Durgnled of Alania, Prince of Alania and Bagrat's close ally. Though Mariam does not love the man it is a boon none the less. Since the birth of her bastard son, Giorgi II, she had been dogged by nasty rumours and hoped that life in a new court would rid her life of such stress.
MarriageMariamwithBuriberdi.jpg

Peacetime brought Bagrat an opportunity that he neglected for such a long time; the consolidation of his power. While going through old document one summer day he came across a rather ancient document that would allow him to create two new titles; Prince of Imertia and Prince of Georgia. Within a week he bestows the titles upon himself and gives his son, Giorgi, the title Count of Abkhazia and Kasogs.

Good news comes to Bagrat's court within another week; The Emirate of Derbent and the Sheikdom of Albania were at war with each other, and Derbent had been severely weakened by the war. Bagrat was eager to declare war on the Emirate of Derbent, to avenge his fallen Georgians, but many nobles hesitated to call for war. Only his Giorgi stood behind him, for the flame of vengeance burned bright in his chest, and that was all the support that Bagrat needed. By August the Kingdom of Georgia went to war with the Emirate of Derbent.

Outline of Georgian-Derbent War
The last two wars had been disastrous, and Bagrat finally understood why. While the Georgian forces were more than capable, there had been little to no planning beforehand. Realising his mistake Bagrat took care to record the initial positions of his armies, the units they were consisted of, and where they would move to.

King Bagrat commanded the regiment from Guria, some 874 men and mostly heavy infantry, archers, and peasant levies drawn from the mountainside areas.
Marshal Smbat Siwnik, a rather capable soldier and a veteran from Byzantine campaigns, commands over 450 men from Tao, numerous light Calvary, supported by a fair amount of knights and assorted heavy infantry.
Chancellor Gabriel Sefareli commands the forces from Abkhazia, which numbers some 800 plus men, mostly heavy infantry.
Bishop Hovhannes insisted on commanding the Kasogs regiment, saying that he is a 'war priest' and is more than capable to battle... only 450 men are in his command. His war council, numbered only four men: Siwnik, Giorgi, Sefareli, and himself. The Bishop was not there because he had 'religious' business to attend to.

The Georgians moved like a broom across the Caucasus, sweeping up the meagre Derbent forces with bristles made of steel. By September of 1070 Bagrats's army was in Semender and three months later Giorgi's army was in Shemakha.
seige-big.jpg

With the beginning of the new year Bagrat captured Semender and the Georgian moved south to help his son, who's siege had been interrupted by hastily levied Derbent forces.

Six more months later Shemakha was liberated by Giorgi's forces and now he and his father moved for the last province under the fallen Emirate's rule; Shirven.

October marked the last days of the Emirate of Derbent's existance. Shirven fell by the end of the month and the former ruler handed his sword to Bagrat.

The triumphant king returned to his throne in Guria by November and in his last months as King saw his ally, the Principality of Alania, attacked by angered citizens. To prevent this he began to redistribute power through his kingdom.

Bagrat died with the beginning of 1072.

This looks good. Georgia is often underplayed because of it's location. Good luck.

Wow. We have lot of megacampigns recently. Good start - style, graphics and interesting country. :)

Sorry for the lack of relevant pictures, I did not take that many for some reason... also blame my girlfriend for the photoshopie pictures... not my idea... she forced me... also (I am very apologetic today aren't I?) sorry for the jumpy narrative... I wrote this over a period of two(ish) days and from time to time I was distracted.

Hope you all like the rest of the AAR (when it comes)!

Off to a good start, there sir!

Glad to see another underrated nation's megacampaign take off.

Like my and others' AAR's, with the right luck, even small nations like Georgia (or Nubia for me), surrounded by enemies, religious enemies to the whole (quite powerful) Muslim world, can make it to greatness.

Is your plan World Domination? Or are you looking for a more "realistic" ending? Like holding the Caucasus and staying there?

Storm.jpg

II: The Storm

IIa: First Blood
Soon after the death of their first major king, Bagrat, and the ascension of his son, Giorgi, the small Kingdom of Georgia saw its emergence as a major world player, and its first major war.

This all began with Giorgi Bagratuni, the first and only son of Bagrat and his successor.
KingGiorgi.jpg

By no means a great warrior or diplomat, Giorgi's specialisation was the little gold coin, and its acquisition. Giorgi lacked the tact and grace of his father, favouring direct negotiations, much to the dislike of more traditional nobles. The only task that Giorgi set out to accomplish, initially, was to pull the kingdom from its debt. Truthfully this was the only task that Giorgi was suited for. If it were not for a slew of competent Marshal-Generals Georgia may have ceased to exist.

Giorgi's grand scheme to bring Georgia to the commercial forefront was divided into six stages. The first of them being the dispersion of power. Giorgi was no stupid man, as such he understood that having his demesne being so large only meant a difficult time to control them. However, before he was able to spread out the power amongst his nobles he was approached by his chancellor, Gabriel Sefareli, a rather capable Georgian Orthodox man, unlike the previous Chancellor who had been Greek (and also slightly mad).

Chancellor Sefareli proposed that one matter should be taken care of first; the Principality of Alania.

The Principality of Alania possessed a rather queer diplomatic relationship with Georgia. Both rulers, Prince Durgulel and King Giorgi, could trace their lineage to the same set of people, just exactly who was a question never answered and seldom asked. All that mattered was that it gave Giorgi claims to the Province of Kuma and Durgulel the province of Kakheti.

The prince had been close friends with Bagrat, and aimed to foster a similar relationship with his son. Giorgi, however, sought for this relation to be a subservient one; him as the master and Durgulel the servant.

Durgulel sent emissaries bearing an offer of alliance, Giorgi sent them back with a offer of vassalization.

By February he received Durgulel's reply:
DeclinedVassalisation-Alania.jpg

Chancellor Sefareli needed not urge his liege for the next course of action; war. Within a day the declaration of war was sent to the ill-fated prince and Giorgi began to draft for the upcoming war.

Armies Deployed During Georgian-Alania War
:

Outline-GeorgiaVAlaniaWarRegiments.jpg

If you squint reeeelly hard you might be able to read them!

The Principality was by no means a threat that required all of the kingdom's armies, but King Giorgi felt that his reputation had been trounced upon, somehow, by Durgulel's refusal to become his vassal, and Giorgi felt that it was his duty to show the world that he was not a king that could be walked upon.

The main threat would stem fro Alania itself, which vomited 2186 sods who, regretfully, were the soldiers tasked with defending the province. The other Counties under Durgulel's rule were minor threats at best. 16 February Giorgi lead 929 men to face the army, close on his heels were the 1268 lead by Chancellor Sefareli, and another 1170 marching from Guria lead by a rather ambitious, young noble, Nerse Berdzenishvili.
The Southern Alania, barely recovering from the previous war that saw the Principality as their new lords, not some minor Emirate waiting to be swallowed by the Turkish behemoth, was the target for the 757 men from Tao, lead by an unknown captain of little importance.
Marshal Smbat, a victor of the previous war and dutiful servant to Giorgi's father, lead the Abkhazia forces, which numbered about 1200, to deal with the northern forces of the Principality.

The Georgian Plan of Action
:
Outline-GeorgiaVAlaniaWarPlanofActi.jpg

The Georgian forces from Tao engage the enemy in Kartli and after a skirmish that lasted little more than a few minutes, the Principalities 'army' (little more than a band of unlucky peasants), dissolves and runs into the brushes that dot the grassy landscape. The men lay siege.

Marshal Smbat mirrors similar success to the north, quickly defeating the army stationed in Yegorlyk and moving onto the neighbouring province, Manych.

Far from the war, in the rather cozy and welcoming castle in Guria, Helena, faithful wife of Giorgi, begins to periodically feeling nauseous, which leads to vomiting in the mornings, avoiding many foods that she once liked, and slight bleeding from the wound God cut into her (and her time of the month was not now...)
GiorgiHelenaexpectingachild.jpg

Halfway through March, Chancellor Sefareli's regiment was attacked in Kasogs by Prince Durgulel's army. When word reached Giorgi he quickly turned his army to march north, as did Marshal Smbat's.

MuslimBurghers.jpg

Giorgi, however, is intercepted by an envoy from his southern province of Shemakha. The Muslim Burghers are in the streets of the major towns & cities of the province, demanding that Islam be allowed to be practised in the province. Giorgi, in his haste, orders for the amount of Orthodox missionaries travelling to the province be increased, and that these missionaries should carry swords under their cloaks.

Giorgi continued his march and by the last days of March he and Smbat had engaged the Principalitie's army, making the Battle of Kasogs the sole major battle of the war.

Outline-GeorgiaVAlaniaWarBattleo-1.jpg

Though Prince Durgulel had superior numbers, the quality of his troops was something to baulk at. Latter reinforcements, lead by Marshal Smbat, only ensured Georgian victory.

With the defeat of their prince the rest of the war became a series of small scale skirmishes along the northern end of the Caucasus. Prince Durgulel accepted a white peace on 27 March 1073, one year and two months after its start. He agrees to revoke his claims on Semender, recognise King Giorgi as rightful Count of Kuma and agrees to pay 20 pieces of gold as reparations payment.

Looks excellent. I hope you can keep the game interesting to yourself long enough so you can finish this megacampaign.

Good luck with school, hope you get back to this.
