AIs aren't able to keep up with the player with or without ecumenopolis right now. I am not sure why you would pinpoint ecumenopolis as the problem.

TBH. AI can't keep up with anything.
Sometimes I can see quite good working empires, but sometimes AI don't even colonize worlds for some strange reason.
Most of the time AI is not better than new player. It's not bad... But not on grand admiral

AI hasn't been able to keep up with even a brand new player in years.

ECU is expensive enough and happens late enough in the game that it's just a win more button unless you want to put up with the endgame lag long enough to kill the FEs and crisis.

The 3rd ascension perk is late? What are you even talking about?

Considering how long the techs take unless you beeline, as well as getting the resources together and actually building the thing, It's pretty rare I have one by 2270, and even rarer that I have one even close to maxed out on districts and jobs.

By that point if the AI is generally hopelessly outmatched.

You seem to underestimate just how bad the stellaris AI was even before 4.0 wrecked it, I'm not even a very good player and I still regularly steamroll it at max settings.

You can pretty easily fight every AI empire in game without going toward any crisis path with under 10 planets. That shouldn't really be possible if the AI was remotely competent. It's one thing when you are steam rolling the AI by utilizing factions or by taking over half the map. They are basically non existent right now.

There's a glitch effecting some AI empires like Common Ground and Prikkiti where their colony ships have no FTL drive.

It isn't too long ago when Paradox added a newer easier difficulty because of the AI improvements pre-4.0
Absolutely. Some people on these forums have real short memories. AI was pretty decent in recent years! There were more than a few fantastic dev diaries about it.

Let's give a round of applause to 4.0 for throwing those improvements in the bin. Particularly with regard to planetary development. Those diaries are really quite cringey to read back, now. They mean nothing anymore.

But hey we get the magic of "District specialisations" in exchange! So that's nice.

the AI can’t keep up with anything. It’s been barely functional since 4.0 dropped. It’s not an ecumenopolis thing, it’s a “the game is essentially broken” thing.

Ecus are on a different scale. You can have 10k science on an ecu, which is a death sentence to AI.
Not an ecu
