Last night on my LAN a friend and I took Bulgaria and Romania in 1939 and played for four hours to see what would develop. What actually happenned was shockingly historic! (contrary to the reports of Romania running wild and wiping out Russia in other messages on this board).
Romania and Bulgaria started out with several months of preparation. The Romanian army was rebuilt to full strength, sub machine guns were researched and shared with Bulgaria and we made plans to launch an offensive in the summer of 1940.
Unfortunately as a democracy Romania doesn't have the ability to truly control their entry. Germany invaded Russia in the spring of 1940 (completely reasonable in my opinion). Russia demanded military access to Romania's lands and when denied a state of war came into existance. Romania hastenned to deploy troops to the border and in late June invaded Russia.
In a successful campaign, Romania swept over the early war, unprepared Soviet armies alongside their unallied but German friends. Meanwhile Bulgaria declared war on Greece and proceeded to fight their way to a victory on the Greek mainland (but unable to reach Crete).
By the winter of 1940 the Romanians had driven all the way to Stalingrad and captured it. A shocking suprise came when Hungary demanded Transylvania and Romania refused. Hungary and the Axis powers then declared war on Romania! Romania knowning they'd be crushed quickly signed a "humiliating peace agreement" and returned to the battle against Russia.
Snow began to fall and travel became difficult, the Romanian armies were grinding to a halt. An opportunity to encircle some Soviet troops presented itself and the Romanians were proud of their brilliant tactics and then the Soviet tank armies counter attacked in force. The Romanian tactics turned from "brilliant" to disasterous as the main army was cut off, Stalingrad fell and half of the Romanian spearhead starved and was obliterated by the counterattacking Russians.
Well it was an enjoyable four hours even with the half a dozen CTDs. The other bug that was really bad was repeat bombing missions getting stuck after our ground forces were victorious (the only way I could get control of our airforces again was to move the ground troops out of the province we'd just taken - luckily this just created a delay as the AI didn't march back into the province just vacated.).
It was very impressive to see the "beaten" Soviet army counter attack in strength during the winter! Very historic!
