Windows 10 Home

N/A (Can't get there)

Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
Hey folks,

I had a Blue Screen of Death as soon as I loaded into my campaign yesterday and now both my PC are a little bit funky, but my Battletech does not work at all anymore. (All my other games do.)

There is a black screen after the developers/publishers show at startup, no sound or no intro cinematic. I can see my cursor, but that's it. I've updated my GeForce/Drivers, I've reinstalled the game and even removed all files relating to it beforehand. I did verify my game with no luck.

Any help is welcome! I am starting to fear it's a damaged driver however, my second screen flickers as soon as anything is done on it (like playing something on netflix, or pausing it) + it opens some program in my taskbar for a second when I do.

Some things are slower now. The BSOD said SOMETHING about 'driver' and I'm concerned it's damaged something. I'm trying to figure out what and if I should be worried. I have no Output Log, the folder is empty.

Have you tried verifying your files?
Yes

Steps to reproduce the issue
Launch the game.

Attach DxDiag (PC), System Info log (Mac), or run sudo lshw -html > specs.html and uploaded specs.html (Linux)
File(s) attached

Attach Output Log
Windows: \Users\YourUserName\AppData\LocalLow\Harebrained Schemes\BATTLETECH\output_log.txt
Mac OS: Users >{name} > Library > Logs > Unity > Player.log
Linux: ~/.config/unity3d/Harebrained Schemes/BATTLETECH/Player.log

File(s) attached

If the game crashed, please attach the crash file with the time stamp closest to the crash.
Windows: [Steam library folder]\steamapps\common\BATTLETECH\DumpBox
For v.17 and beyond try here: C:\Users\[YourUserName]\AppData\LocalLow\Harebrained Schemes\BATTLETECH
OSX: Macintosh HD > Users > [username] > Library > Application Support > Steam > steamapps > common > BattleTech > DumpBox
Linux: [Steam library folder]/steamapps/common/BATTLETECH/DumpBox

File(s) attached

If a save game was loaded at the start of the game session, upload it. Please make sure to upload the save game with the timestamp closest to when you loaded it.
Windows:
Steam: [Steam installation folder]\userdata[SteamID]\637090\remote\C0\SGS1
GOG: 'C:\Users\USER_ID\AppData\Local\GOG.com\Galaxy\Applications\50593543263669699\Storage\Shared\Files\C#\SGS#'
Vanilla:'C:\Users\USER_ID\AppData\LocalLow\Harebrained Schemes\BattleTech\C#\SGS#'
OSX:
Steam: Macintosh HD > Users > [username] > Library > Application Support > Steam > userdata > [SteamID] > 637090 > remote > C#> SGS#

I had a Blue Screen of Death
BSoD are always Windows, driver or hardware problems, I'm afraid! The ones recorded in that dxdiag give us no details, so next time you see one record all the text on that screen for us.

We do see one crash in nvwgf2umx.dll so:
- uninstall nVidia https://developer.nvidia.com/cleanup-tool
- reboot
- install August 2023 fresh from here https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
- reboot again

THEN in the game's options menu, video, advanced, make sure Vsync is enabled.

If that doesn't get the game going, Please attach here the game log:
C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\LocalLow\Harebrained Schemes\BATTLETECH\output_log.txt

To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

I haven't had one since, sadly.

I'll give this a try and see if it launches, but unfortunately there is no output log at the moment in the appdata.

Unless you've done a clean reinstall AND the game is not even attempting to start, there really must be an output log there !

I did a clean install of Battletech, yes. The solution above sadly didn't work. :(

Maybe I need to find every single Battletech file and removed them?

Edit: There is one now, actually! After I tried to launch today.

Please go to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Harebrained Schemes\BATTLETECH\ and delete the profiles.dat file .
Note it may be under Local, LocalLow or Roaming, depending. To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

I can see the AppData, it is how I got the log after all. :)

I do want to ask, does removing the profiles remove savegames? I would also like to add, I did a full uninstall (steam folder and appdata folder) of Battletech and it didn't work, but I'll attempt to do the profiles.dat nonetheless!

Edit: OH MY GOD IT LAUNCHED.

IT LAUNCHEDDD. I'm so friggin' excited! I don't know what changed but suddenly it works, thank you! ♥

The crash/BSoD corrupted your BT user profile file, it must have been open and being written to at that moment.

Thank you! Still odd that removing my entire folder there didn't work before though. I'm so excited to be playing again and raging viciously at my mechs being torn apart by a staggering amount of enemies. Thank you. ♥
