Missile graphics still look bad after 1.8.1

Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
Smoke trails are exaggerated, and the smoke is too thick, looks very bad when firing many missiles and, and up close. The light from the missile thrust also seems missing compared to how it was pre 1.8.

Will attach screenshots from pre 1.8/1.8.1 for comparison.

Steps to reproduce the issue
Fire missiles at enemies and observe the missile trail effects. Specifically when the camera uses the over-the-shoulder view it's most pronounced.

Attach DxDiag (PC), System Info log (Mac), or run sudo lshw -html > specs.html and uploaded specs.html (Linux)
