One line summary of your issue
Steam won't work. Gamepass will

What platform are you running the game on?
Steam

What operating system do you use?
Windows 10

Which version of the game are you running?
WHatever steam updates to. I can't open it.

What DLC do you have installed?
Flashpoint, Urban Warfare, Heavy Metal

Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
It won't finish the install. It gets to the end and then I think it tries to update and it stops and gives a "Disk Write Error"

I uninstalled and reinstalled. I uninstalled and reinstalled on another hard drive. I deleted all the files I could find manually, including save files, and then tried reinstalling.

I was able to install and play the Gamepass version, but my DLC is on the Steam version

Have you tried verifying your files?
Yes

Steps to reproduce the issue
It won't install. It gets to the end and then says "Disk Write Error" but the disks are fine and the Gamepass version installs fine.

This is where uploads were required, but I just uploaded junk files because it won't install. Like, I can't get any screenshots because it won't load at all.

Please attach here the game log:
C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\LocalLow\Harebrained Schemes\BATTLETECH\output_log.txt

To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here. IF dxdiag.txt fails to attach here, rename it to dxdiag.log , or zip it up. Thanks.

We see one game error at the end of that log, but apparently only after some successful play. But from your account you can't even start the game from Steam, is that right? If so perhaps that log is from the gamepass version, please delete that log file then try the Steam version again. Attach here a new log file if it makes one.

No, that's the steam version. I was able to play it; I played it for a long while in 2018. Then I played it again for a while, decided to get the DLC, and then the next day it stopped working.

Also: I did use a save editor, and it worked like twice, although took a lot of fun out of things, so I decided not to use that save, could that have effed the whole thing up even thought I deleted all the saves trying to do a clean install?

Editing a save cannot have stopped the game from working, no.

If you delete that log and try the Steam game again, does it make a new log?

Can i get the dxdiag I asked for please?

Weird, I thought it had uploaded. It should be there now.

Deleted the log. Tried to update, it failed again. Disk read error.

At this point I'd just like to be able to use the DLC I bought on Steam with the Gamepass version that works. Is that possible?

Edit: Steam Keys don't work like CD keys do they? Like, it shows I bought the expansion here on my profile; I can't take that as a receipt over to gamepass at all can I?

Let's try again. Oddly, every time I upload te DxDiag, it disappears upon hitting save.

Edit: DId not attach. What am I doing wrong? It's just a .txt file.

Is there a relevant section? It's a LOT of text to just paste into a thread....

It is a bug in the forum software. As I mentioned above:
IF dxdiag.txt fails to attach here, rename it to dxdiag.log , or zip it up. Thanks.

Deleted the log. Tried to update, it failed again. Disk read error.
You are getting both these errors? This while installing in the Steam app, is that right?

It is not, I am sorry - MS and Steam are competitors, you don't get content free on one because you own it on the other!

Golly, my attention to detail has been horrendous. I apologize. Should have the proper renamed file uploaded.

And I don't know why I typed read error. It's just a write error. I think it might even be in an update? But it happens at the very end of the instal. 10.2 gigs downloaded, then it goes to unpack, and disk write error.

Edit: Well, renaming it worked. Making it a PDF didn't work, but making the PDF into apparently 44 separate JPGS, that worked.

I have found that simply compressing dxdiag.txt and attaching that .zip or .rar file here works fine. I did find those separate PDFs hard to work with, but AFAICS there's no cause of this problem in there.

However I'm still not 100% sure; the disk write error is while installing the game in Steam, is that right? You are not doing it via our standalone Paradox launcher?

If that is right, start with a Steam Flush Config

If that doesn't help, we'll need to do a clean reinstall of Steam and game:

- Remove the game from Steam (uninstall)
- exit the Steam app entirely
- Manually delete all these files and folders, if still there:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\BattleTech\
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Harebrained Schemes\ (To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\USER_ID\637090\
(first move the \remote\C#\SGS#\ folder elsewhere to keep your save games)

- delete everything in the Steam folder EXCEPT steam.exe and the SteamApps folder
- run steam.exe to rebuild all that

- Install the game again
- add steam.exe and BattleTech.exe to the Whitelist of your antivirus app, whatever it is

Good luck!

Did every one of those steps, and this is still what I get. Interestingly it was always 10.2 GB and not 10.3 like it says this time.

There is a shortcut to Battletech on my Desktop now though, it pops up this message when I launch it:

But then it immediately goes to this error:

This install is entirely done by Steam. It is hard to see what could possibly be wrong with it, that a clean reinstall of Steam wouldn't fix.

Does this only affect this one game? Our game Crusader Kings 2 is free to play on Steam, does it install okay?

If you only have one Steam Library on this machine, can you please make another one and see if the game installs there?

I have all three shadowruns and they work just fine. It's literally just this game. I had the DLC for a day, and then this happened, but I left the game running overnight and I can't even get a refund.

Uh, how would one make a second steam library? I do have two hard drives, and I've gotten the error installing it to either hard drive if that matters?

Right, but have you installed any other game since this game had this problem? If not, please test with CK2 as I suggested.

I think you go into Steam-preferences-storage, and choose Add Drive from the drop-list up the top.
