best game i have played so far, i have always doubted playing england as being joyful. when i first played it i got destroyed in 20 years. Well this current game i am playing im really doing well, with luck and some lessons learned from you guys and previous mistakes, i have built an awesome, peaceful empire that spans the globe and im only in 1603 so far. questions though to things that arent familier to me.

why in some provinces that i try to colonize will it only give me an option for trade post but not colony, even though i have 5000gold in bank, no natives there anymore as i killed them, um, i just cant figure it out, central usa provinces seem to be the worst with this, any ideas?

also, currently my income of taxes and production and trade and gold adds up to 190ducats it varies time to time but average is 190, my question is , is that any good or should i be doing more to increase that? this is the best i have done in the game but am i still way under par compared to others who really know how to make the most of the game?

also , i am finding it much easier, sort of a cheat in a way, when i make great relations with most countries, form good alliences to protect myself, but when they go to war i dishoner the allience to stay out of conflict when i can. so to protect my land holdings. shouldnt there be a much bigger penalty when you dishoner the alliance than just -1 stability. i mean the allies i betrayed came running back to me right away for me to join the alliance again, what gives? they should be kicking my butt.

I stay out of war with england after a desasterous war against france and spain and netherlands in mid 1500s. my armies of england are the most expensive but the worst fighters even with a good general, my maintnance is 100% i have more numbers than them and they still whoop me good. what do i need to do to win battles against armies of france and netherlands????

do the indian nations in the americas get tech upgrades in military?
do the indians in india nations get tech upgrades in military?

by the way, i could not for the life of me be able to vassalize netherlands, i tried 50 times over and over but no matter what they refused. i had all the requirements too. any suggestions?

ok thats it for now, thanks for your answers and help and advice, the game is fun with england after all :)

france was too easy to play, at least england was a challenge in the beginning.

You normally need a chain of 700+ pop cities to a province to establish a new colony there.

If it works for you, it's OK. If not you need more 'lebens raum'.

shouldnt there be a much bigger penalty when you dishoner the alliance than just -1 stability.

Do you realise what happens when you drop in stability ? Your income drops and diplomatic actions become harder. Also not participating in a war means there are no money or provinces to gain either. Thus I don't nessecarily think your getting off that easy. =)

Better land tech ?
Not ingnore the effect of terrain ?

Check the sticky combat thread in the FAQ forum.

They didn't feel they needed your protection. Try again when you have much more troops then they, they are not at +3 stability while you are and your monarch has a high Dip rating. You will probably succede then. The requoirements are only requirements to try in the first place, not a certain way to take over another country just like that.

I've had the problem with England being pretty useless at fighting in the early stages. It's probably the usual combination of factors (tech level, commanders etc) but do make sure to 'up' the maintenance to 100% when you start a war. One of my more embarrassing European battles happened like this and 1000 fresh graduates from the Dutch military academy put 7000 of my troops to flight. After that I adopted the lazy approach of letting the German allies do all the fighting and just lending a hand at the end of every battle or when a province is about to fall.

For some reason the problem seemed to disappear around this time of the game and I can only assume this was due to tech level rather than any grand tactical genius on my part.

Probably not a good idea to fight against Spain and France at the same time and particularly not at the start of the game.

If you have to then make sure your navy is up to the challenge but my general rule is to try to get one or other of these two out of the war with a white peace very early. Even if you are strong enough to take them one I would still advise you to concentrate all your forces on one opponent rather than split them between two.

Oh yeah and always leave troops in strategic colonies. These can become very useful in times of war as they can often be used to burn trading posts and capture weakly defended colonies. This also sets their colonial aspirations back years so you can even lose the war but win in the long run.
