Looking for something a less event-driven experience, and one where even minor nations (Wasn't it basically impossible to survive as Poland or Czechoslovakia?) are potentially playable. Anything like that around?

Iron Cross. In the Reichs Expansion Pack, you can play not only for Germany, but it is sharpened for it.
In Iron Cross, you can play for any country and achieve amazing results. For example, playing for Iran, I captured India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Iron Cross is a unique game.

Never heard of Iron Cross, but it sounds exactly like what I'm looking for! Thanks!

This rather new mod (well, rework of a rather old but perhaps the most popular mod which have many derivatives), has been on my radar since the first released patch. Skilled dev, and definitively opening up for more sandbox of an experience.

If you want to test how sandbox, try influencing various nations with gold cheat, constantly, as your country of choice, and you'll see what I mean. But not only can unorotodox alliances occur, but there's been a re-balancing of events relating to diplomacy too, so you're not as railroaded on towards a historical alliance path as you usually are. That said, don't think it's anything like Kaiserreich.

Thank you for the suggestion! Also, having played Kaiserreich: While its not railroady, it is still extremely event-based, I feel, unless that has changed since last time I played (Around 2017, I wanna say?).

Ericafaq's Peace without Victory (PvW) offers some interesting alternate history paths; not true sandbox (maybe you should just check Hoi4?) but still offers a lot more freedom and "What if?" than vanilla DH.
