I always just move my capital to a province with that religion, convert through decision, and change it back on leader death. There is probably a better way though

Open console, type "religion X" where X is the religion. If you want to do it legit, then either get a concubine of that religion, or own a province of it, and make it your capital, then convert, and move back when you can.

Does that work in CK2+? Ever since I installed it, I've only been able to take that decision if my capital's religion was in the same group as my current one, so I couldn't convert from Sunni to Catholic, for instance.

I can confirm it's different in Plus. I think it might work with a sympathy trait, but I'm not sure.

It seems you're right. The file for the decision lists exceptions for characters with sympathy traits. I also compared the files for the decision in vanilla and Plus and noted there the Plus file has an extra line: "religion_group = ROOT" Do you think erasing that will restore the ability to convert across groups?
