In a recent game I was getting quite frustrated at one of my vassals not fielding an army which I thought was appropriate to their size. They didn't have religious unity problems because I converted their provinces before handing them over and I kept overextension low for them by feeding them slowly so there didn't seem to be a good reason for them to have been struggling and have got into debt.

If they had been an ally (or the ally of a potential enemy) then I could have used the war declaration screen to see how much debt they had at a glance but, as a vassal, there was simply no way for me to find out. What I had to do was look at the tooltip in the score comparison screen to see if they had a malus for loans and then, knowing that one loan gives a malus of -0.2, calculate how many loans they had. Then I had to guess at an average size of loan and multiply to get a rough idea of their debt. Having done that, I would then send them a gift that was about 50% more than my guess so that they could pay off their debt and build some units. Then, a month later when I was eligible to send them another gift I would repeat the exercise to see if I had underestimated the debt.

This is VERY irritating and it got me thinking that there must be an easier way so I have a few suggestions:

1. Add an alert for subjects with debt so that the player is alerted to the issue and can make a choice about whether to try and help.

2. Add a subject interaction where you can see a financial summary for your subject showing their income and expenses (you can get the income from the ledger but I don't think you can see expenses so you have no way of knowing how much they are paying in interest, for example) so that you can get an idea of how strong their economy is.

3. When sending a gift to a subject, have the screen tell you how much total debt they have so you don't have to guess how much to give them but can actually see all the information you need at the time you are making the gift.
