Problems with Spy Folder, Extract HELP

I installed Arma, 1.2, Then WinRAR 3.80. When I loaded the 1.3 beta
into that, the WinRAR window opened with 1 application and 7 or 8
folders in it.. Here's where I was confused. I clicked on the application
first and extracted it to the arma folder and the window just closed.
I started a D.D. as U.S.A. and the screen code read
Doomsday Armageddon V 1.3beta Jan 15 2009 (VBLV) which I think
is correct, but my Intel folder says there's 1,078,280,192 forein spies
in my borders and I cant buy any spies, which doesn't seem right.
I have 3 probably dumb questions.

1. Is there something wrong with the Intel folder ?

2. Did I extract the 1.3 correctly ?

3.Was the WinRAR 3.80 the correct one.

Copy the rar file into the Doomsday (or Armageddon if you have the anthology) folder. Right click on the file and choose extract here. Overwrite all files when requested.

Your checksum should be DVJN

Computers, Patching, and Zipping are still fairly new to me so I wasn't
quite sure what I was supposed to right click on. I messed around with
it and got it working by clicking on the FILE tap (in the WinRAR window),
then SELECT ALL, and extracted to Armageddon, it seemed to work.
The checksum read (DVJN) and the Intel folder is fine now.
After I changed a few numbers in the Difficulty folder the checksum
changed to (KKNN), is that normal ?

One last thing, I spent days installing and uninstalling, posting questions,
and going through threads and replies trying to piece together a few
simple answers. If theres a site or a thread out there with step by step
instructions on all the patches, I couldn't find it. If there isn't one,
there should be. I'm sure I'm not the only newbie playing this game.

Thanks for the reply

It is normal for the checksum to change when you mod files, it is to make sure that everyone is playing the same game in Multi-player.

There are so many patches for the different versions (HOI2, Doomsday, Arma) and they all use the same numbering scheme, it can get very confusing even if you think you know what you are doing.

Always feel free to ask any question you have, even if you think it is "simple", silly or stupid. Without a search function it can be very hard to find information around here without asking. :)
