Hello,

I'm playing as Japan and to make game somewhat different I decided to attack USSR instead of USA. The war is raging now for three years and is going well so far, regarding the fact that I don't have any tanks or mechanizated army so my cavalry is the fastest unit on the field. For some reason unknown Germans are not (yet) participating and all is quiet on European border.

Now I wonder - is there something like a bitter peace event for Japanese? Sort of surrender of the USSR to the Japanese (and only to the Japanese)? Because it will really take a long long time, before my infantry would walk all the way from Siberia to Leningrad.

hi first time writer long time player

I've read these boards for a long time , LOVE the game , i can spend an entire DAY and night playing ....

it's too bad there's no bitter peace for japan , i was myself playing as japan a few days ago , i started by killing of china in late 38 and then DOW on the soviets in mid 39 ... well by late 1941 i was at war with the US and i quickly secured the phillipeans and the outlying islands to form the defence chain for japan ... i was coming along VERY VERY VERY slowly in the land war with the russians ... without tanks it seems to take FOREVER to get troops all the way from japan to the border , and even using the reserves from the pupped china , it was taking so long i just gave up ....

Has ANYONE ever conqured the soviets as japan ? if so can anyone suggest a stradgey for winning the land war before we die of bordum ? it would be nice if the creaters of the game raised the INF values a bit in the sibera and middle of russia ...

Use paratroopers.

Actually, this kinda illustrates why invading Russia is such a bad plan... it is so damn big and mostly crappy terrain to cross, that inevitably two things will occur :-

a) General Winter shows up; and

b) The Russians get time to build new units and fight back.

while i considered that , i was under the impression that the AI doesnt use them , so i don't want to either , it would be like cheating ..
Why is it that everyone on these forums considers using good tactics to be 'cheating'?

I'd love for the AI to use paratroopers. It would give my patrolling fighters something really juicy to shoot down.

But I guess if I shot down AI-controlled paratroopers that would be 'cheating' also. Pfft.

Well, I'm well on my way, already reaching Kiev. Since infrastructure there is quite better than siberian I do hope to reach Leningrad in a year, maybe more, depends on the resistance and my org level. My transport capacities are killing me, already reaching twice the allowed level.

I do hope that Germans won't join in, because I want to release russian puppet and can't do that, if the western part is in german hands.

My tactics was to start in Sinking as far west as possible, while deploying only few units along the border from Mongolia to Vladivostok. At the beginning it was very hard, because Japanese have only limited number of infantry and I focused on researching and building ships but later on Chinese started to contribute some divisons and Manchuria also has about 20 divisons on the field so not entire burden is on me. It all become somehow easier when I started two lines of motorized infantry. I usually use a group of three infantry and one motorized unit. While motorized unit attack, the other three are supporting it. When the territory is conquered, I strategically redeployed the three to the new territory (they can't walk, usually it's too far), while the spearhead is resting and gaining org. Then the procedure is repeated. It works only in the north and east though, I still need to figure out what to do with massive tank armies that face me in the west.

Parachuters are not really an option. Transport planes are incredibly expensive, especially for Japanese industry and have only limited range, which is not enough for Russia. But the biggest problem are airfields, or lack of them, where transport plane usually needs an eternity to gain its org level to be able to attack.

Lack of airfields is easily solved if you've anticipated a Russian campaign and earlier in the game you've placed airbases in a production queue. Range is not an issue if you've been researching more advanced models, and reorganization of the planes takes less time than marching.

The only real issue is the cost of planes, which is proportionately very large to the poor Japanese economy. However, it is affordable. You just have to decide to not build as much of something else (like motorized infantry). As in many things with CORE, you have to choose what path to take and the sacrifices you're willing to make.

please let me know how your attack on the soviets ends , by the way what's the timeline on all of this ? how many years is it taking you from the start of your war with them ?

Less than 2 years.

I started in october '39 and now, in december '41 I'm almost done. They put a good fight, but then the Germans attacked and in two, three months SU fell apart. I could probably be quicker, but I spend a lot of resources in building fleet and researching navy and air doctrines.

Question: All necessary prerequisites for bitter peace are fulfilled and I expect it to fire any time. I'm not in an alliance with Germans. When it wil fire, will I keep the territory I conquered (all the southern part - Stalingrad, Baku, Kiev...) or will it be handed back to the new soviet state? I remember from other games that Japanese got huge parts of east, but right now I hold much more than that.

When the BP fires the Germans will get the lands west of the Urals. Regardless of whether it's the Japanese that actually conquered those territories. The same problem exists with the BP event if the Americans (or anyone else) does the conquering. The BP event assumes it's the Germans doing the conquering of the western Soviet Union.

BTW, I just noticed that the German AI does build paratroopers, even though it doesn't seem to use them as anything but weak infantry.

i've never seen the AI use them , nor have i yet to see the AI make a landing in france after the germans take over .... i really don't like the AI , its weak

What about territory east from the Ural? Do the Japanese always get only the territory that is foreseen for them?

Is there a way to prevent bitter peace to happen? Maybe if I DOW Germany?

Or should I let some necessary province to be taken back by the russians, like Stalingrad, then conquer entire country to the last victory point, and after that take Stalingrad back and in the same second annex the country. That would allow me to keep the territory, wouldn't it?

hmm i dont think you want to dow on germany cause they will kick your ass , thats what happened to me as japan in one game , case in point i once played as jap and took china then dow against the germans ,allies and usa , then i had the incident with the russians , anyways to make a long story short , the bitter peace even didnt fire for the germans so they came all the way across russia and ended up attacking me ,at that point i gave up , my divisions were no match for their tanks .

your second theory sounds more reasonable , and if worst does come to worst you could dow on german...

Actually I do intend to attack Germany because otherwise I can't release Russian puppet and TC is killing me. I do also expect Pearl Harbor event to fire soon, not to mention that I have 3 army groups of marines ready in Saigon and Taiwan for British and allies. Chinese puppet will try to take care of India. Yep, it looks like I'm a megalomanic warmonger. :D

As for bitter peace - if I found the right event ("Sue for peace with Germans - Japan wants a bigger slice) it goes like this:

-----
trigger = {
war = { country = GER country = SOV }
OR = {
control = { province = 56 data = GER } # Paris is not free
control = { province = 56 data = VIC } # Paris is not free
}
AND = {
NOT = {
war = { country = GER country = JAP }-----

If I understand that correctly there wont be any bitter peace event, if I attack Germany right away?
