everything was normal until yesterday, when the gamescreen flickers black every half second. Gets quite annoying! I didnt do anything to the game that would have caused it. What should I do? (besides reinstall)

Try to rename your AVI folder to for example AVI_BAK.
It contains intro movies only which will be skipped if you rename the AVI folder. The movies are played by binkplayer which was causing similar problems for other people in other Paradox games.
Don't forget to restart the computer after renaming your folder.
