Summary

Blurred map graphics and map objects

Description

Since one of the last updates my map graphics have become blurred. The game used to run alright on the same graphics settings that now also produce the error. I have attempted a clean reinstall, changing graphical options (esp shaders), verified files etc. I also do not run any mods. It's reminiscent of when your pc uses an incompatible graphics card, but the drop-down in the settings shows the correct one being used that worked before. Unfortunately, I can't pinpoint the exact patch since when this issue arose, since I haven't been playing for a while now.

I have contacted support and they have forwarded me here with the issue. Their response was the following:

We observed an unusual error and several instances of script system error. The possible cause of these errors could be the corruption of the specific game/save or the presence of a faulty mod. The exact errors can be seen below.

[23:01:33][pdx_data_factory.cpp:1341]: Failed to find type 'FilterablePropertyList' in 'FilterablePropertyList.GetPropertiesLabel'.

[13:15:48][jomini_script_system.cpp:261]: Script system error!
Error: Event target link 'c' returned an unset scope
Script location: file: common/dynamic_country_names/dynamic_country_names.txt line: 420

Steps to reproduce

Merely getting into the country selection screen when starting a new game. The map is blurred once you zoom in. There are currently no up to date save games I could load to see if this issue also arises that way.

Those errors are unrelated to your problem, everyone gets them.

Right click on victoria3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, cap refresh rate at 60.

If those don't help:
DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3/pdx_settings.json .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log

Unfortunately the fix where I managed to fix the map with changing the Anti-Aliasing settings did not work sustainably. Not even going to Medium graphical settings guarantees success. The graphics seem really really broken and seem to follow no discernible pattern in their wonkiness...

Actually I managed to make it worse with my most recent tries by using settings that solved some of the issues in the past.

Could you maybe give the directions to these actions you mention for a MacOS, please? Then I would try those now. Thanks!!

There's no need to make this change on MacOS:
Right click on victoria3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.

This change is the same as on Windows:
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, cap refresh rate at 60.

The logs are in the same location on MacOS as I gave above.

Also in Steam please click on Steam-Help-System Info, and paste everything there into a text file and attach that here.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately turning VSync off or the update didn't solve the issue. Attached you can find the requested text file.

Your AMD Radeon Pro 5300M video is basically the same performance as the minimum requirement for the game under MacOS, the AMD® Radeon™ R9 M380. So probably all we can do is have you reduce the graphics quality settings in the game as much as you can stand!

But we might do a clean reinstall first, as 1.7 has just been released:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-Vic3
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Victoria3 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam Victoria3 or Documents Victoria3 locations, before installing again.

**File Locations on Mac OS X**
The executable and DLC folder are in Users/USER/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Victoria3/
To see it go to the Finder, hit command-shift-G (ie Go To) and type in ~/Library/ .
The user files (settings files, error logs, saved games, mods) are in /Users/USER/Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3/ .

Good luck!

Unfortunately that also didn't help. It is especially frustrating since it used to work totally fine up to a certain update during a time I didn't play the game too much. Also it is highly peculiar how during all my efforts to fix things there were occasionally sessions where the graphics were just magically fixed, sometimes seemingly without doing anything different. But yeah, apparently nothing helps even though it should technically run.

Quite a pain when being so hyped about the new content and having pre-ordered + season pass back when it was released. :((

I am sorry! However your mention that it occasionally works fine, is completely puzzling - not really sure what to make of that.

If you revert to 1.6.x then do another clean reinstall, do you still get this problem?

Hi, came back from long travels only this week. I tried reverting the game with clean reinstalls and it didn't seem to solve the issue. The other day I also once again tried the most current up-to-date version and for the first startup it worked alright (on medium settings) but during the second startup it did not any longer. I would run the game on mostly low settings anyways, but that also doesn't fix the main problem. I can't see the GPU being responsible, but nothing else comes to mind either... :(((

As you say, whatever the cause it makes no sense to me that it sometimes works and sometimes does not.

My best guess is that though your AMD Radeon Pro 5300M video is basically the same performance as the minimum requirement for the game under MacOS (as shown on GPU User benchmark, anyway) , the AMD® Radeon™ R9 M380, being a mobile chipset it is just not quite up to running the game.

You've tried choosing Low in the game's graphics settings? Disabling everything in there you can?

Yes I have tried disabling absolutely everything, which didn't help. I tried running the game in bootcamp now and that actually worked okay, akin to what I was used to when the game first released - so there might be some strange compatibility shenanigans going on. Despite not really planning to use Bootcamp and thus not running the game really, I think I will give it up for now. Everything I tried and you suggested unfortunately didn't get the game running as it did in the past, which is a real shame, but seemingly just how it is now...

The video requirements under Windows are lower than those under MacOS so that makes sense to me.

All the best!
