I am looking for something that goes in depth to the family dynasties of Venice and the general mechanics of the Republic.

The only books I can find are some fairly basic introductions or overviews of their history. I have already purchased City of Fortune but it's still on the way so I haven't even had a look yet. Though I'm not sure if it is focuses at all on the information I am after.

Language of the book is not an issue if you can identify a book in Italian as well which probably would have a greater variety of choice. I do prefer reading books in English though.

Venice, A Maritime Republic by Frederic Lane goes quite in deep in the internal working of the republic. Especially from an economic history point of view.
The book has a certain age, the first edition is from the Seventies, but it is still one of the main works on the topic.
Recently an Italian edition of the book, Storia di Venezia, has been published. Seems to be the cheapest version available at the moment.

Double vote on Lane & Norwich.

However, they are not substitutes. Norwich gives you the doge-by-doge narrative, whereas Lane is more thematic. Lane is the better scholar, but Norwich is more fun. Read them both.

Thanks, will have a go at both.
