Getuilo Vargas stands up from his seat at the front of a long table to give a short speech. It is more than expected that when one comes into political power in a country they say something inspirational to its people. Well Vargas had a very different idea of an acceptance speech. His version was supposed to strike fear into the hearts of all who would have opposed him. When he was satisfied that the point intended was understood by all Vargas sat back down and concentrated on eating his steak.
The recent political instability of Brazil had left its leaders in weak positions. They to Vargas had been screaming oust me! That is what he had set out to do. Either by the accepted political means or by more unethical approaches. Born and educated in the United States Vargas had only recently immigrated to Brazil. Once settled he had set up a ruthless campaign to totally rework the weak countries government. He did not lie to the people of the country in the least. All he had said to win their support was an offer of a stable government and a promise to improve the horrendous economic status.
He was officially brought into power on the first day of 1942 and hoped to keep control of the South American country until death tore it from his grasp. He banquet he was attending had been organized by a close friend to celebrate his coming to power. As good as the food and as fine as the wine was Vargas was eager to leave and begin Brazil's recovery. When the party finally did end Vargas did not immediately head towards his private residence but rather wandered the streets of Rio plotting how he would obtain ever more power.
The following day Vargas began to make changes to the countries current state. He appointed a few old cronies to key government and military positions to ensure his total unchallenged grasp of power. Massive industrial improvements were planed for 1943 and two new divisions of infantry authorized for development. The leading scientists of Brazil were offered generous grants to research improved infantry weapons. Some of the most skilled economic minds in all of South America began to offer deals to the many nations of the world asking for various supplies and resources. All of these actions were directly ordered or agreed upon by Vargas. He had ordered his staff to include him in every aspect of the countries management.
From his first day in office Vargas urged his fellow countrymen towards war he was sure that it was the only way for the fragile country to survive through the coming years. Vargas favored chopping away at his tiny weak neighboring nations and creating a union of all the people of South America.
Days passed and Vargas did not lessen his grip of Brazil and thus the first months of Brazil’s latest leaders reign passed more or less uneventful with preparation for greater things to come the highest priority on every man endowed with power in the Brazilian government.
