After having had walk overs as various countries I decided to try Britain in the hopes that the AI would give a decent game.

Vanilla 1.05c set to hard/aggressive with the following self imposed restrictions:

Tech exchange is limited to giving one tech to a country when it first joins the alliance or giving one tech in return whenever the country gives me one.

I will not take military control of any country that I did not start the game having control.

1936-1938: The early years followed the typical pattern in Europe with Germany getting Austria and Chzechoslovakia without any trouble. No unusual occurances.

In Asia, however, the Japanese have not yet declared war on China.

I sent a few divisions to reinforce various locations in the Far East and only did a minor build up in the Mid East. I also dispatched a strong task force of 7 ships to Singapore.

I established a BEF in France of about 10 divisions which I kept under my control and had in the two provinces bordering Belgium nearest to the coast.

I took a fairly balanced approach to research and to building up forces during peace time.

It became clear in early 1937 (this was my first time ever playing Britain) that I was easily going to peg all 4 resources at 99k and be wasting a large amount of each. I established moderate size convoys to Commonwealth members and New Zealand to pump their economies.

1939:

Poland went off on schedule without a hitch and the usual Balkan coutries are falling into the Axis fold as expected.

After shifting forces west, Germany crushed the Benelux countries in October. My British advance into Antwerp in an attempt to hold part of Belgium was pushed back across the border into France. Germany stopped at the Belgian border apparently to wait for spring.

Italy joined the Axis in December of 1939. Yugoslavia was still neutral at this point.

I began rolling up the Italians in North Africa easily even though I only had a few British divisions there and was using mainly Iraqi troops to do the job.

As of the end of 1939, Japan had still not declared war on China.

You're expecting a war with Japan, or you want to help China, or what?

1940:

I finished off the Italians in Northern and Eastern Africa. Next I took Sardinia. I was being fairly aggresive with the Mediterranean fleets but no major naval engagment with the Italians took place though there were several smaller ones.

At some month in early 1940 (I forget the exact date) Japan declared war on me without ever having gone to war with China.

I took Syracusa with 4 divisions.

Germany and their allies crushed Yugoslavia. I was able to do little and my only assistance was in the form of a supply convoy to Dubrovnic.

Japan took Hong Kong. The 2 divisions I had stationed there would have put up a better fight if I had not neglected to combine them into one corps under a decent commander. The fleet stationed in Hong Kong managed to fight its way out and most ships survived to reach Singapore. The subs I restationed to Borneo instead.

The 4 divisions in Syracusa pushed north into Messina. things got tense when the Italians counterattacked in Messina with a large force at the same time the Japanese landed in Malaysia. This was May. After some hectic scrambling with tranport fleets and my few reserve divisions I managed to hold in both places.

While the above was going on the Germans had finally decided to move and had driven through the wooded gap between the BEF and the Maginot. Since they hadn't hit me directly I didn't receive notice and was busy elsewhere.

The French position became untenable quickly but fighting went on and Vichy was not formed until Novemeber. Most of the BEF was able to withdraw safely in the week before Vichy was declared though I later lost them in a foolish attempt to help Denmark.

At this point, my Iraqi forces in Libya started rolling up French West Africa. I also had a couple of divisions who were able to take care of the French port in East Africa.

The Japanese have taken several islands from the Dutch and have established a strong foothold in Papua/New Guinea.

The Germans have taken northern Norway and I have sent 4 divisions to southern Norway to help in the defense.

The really bad news at the end of 1940 is the Americans. Since none of the events in China or Indochina triggered to encourage the Americans to enter the war, their WE is still below 50%. To make things even worse, they elected the isolationist Taft instead of Roosevelt.

Right now my hopes for survival seem pinned to the Russians and I am assuming the Japanese will hit them hard since they are not tied up in China.

Sueing for peace? Do you mean with Germany or Japan?

Is there anything I can do diplomatically to encourage the U.S. to enter the war? I was under the impression that I could not.

So far things are not desparate but I will probably have to reinforce the Far East a lot and even dispatch a couple more fleets there.

At least Spain is nuetral so Gibralter is relatively safe.

Declare war on the USA, that will increase their war entry...

Ha. Well now at least I know everyone is rooting for me to go down in flames on this one.

It'll be a few days before I get through 1941 but in the meantime I can give some details on secondary concerns.

At the beginning of the war the number of transports I had in reserve once I ahd all convoys in place was 1400. That number is now down to 1150 and this is with 2 fewer convoys running since I shut down the one to Hong Kong obviously and also had to stop the one I had from Bombay to Broome feeding resources to Australia.

KUTGW!..??????? wtf??

Invade Japanese Homeland and then they'll sue for peace and they are out of the war, then concentrate on Germany and the poor, dissalusioned 'old Roman Army'!

1941:

Germany invaded Russia in late spring. The front stalemated having penetrated only one zone deep on the Russian side of the border for several months. In the Fall, the Germans advanced another 3 zones or so in the north.

After a drawn out struggle the Germans are on the run in Norway.

The Japanese expansion has peaked and they are losing ground in the Pacific. Apparently not going to war with China meant they had very little in the way of forces on the mainland. Russia annexed Manchukuo easily and has taken the northern half of Korea.

The situation on Papua/New Guinea is bad with the Japanese building up faster than I am.

I liberated most of Indochina for the French.

Russia has also annexed Finland.

At the end of 1941 the Americans are still neutral and have a war entry of only 37%.

I have 10 divisions in Messina facing off against 60 Italian divisions on the other side of the straight. They have been throwing air raids at me non-stop for over a year and my fighter squadrons continue to bleed them badly.

I expect the Axis to lose this one but it is almost certainly going to end up a communist dominated world.

tRY TO HELP THE Su as little as u can. If the worst comes to the worst ,you'll have to go 2 war with them!

N E SCREENIES?

Interesting situations. I don't think I've ever had the Japs not get involved in China.

Edit: that probably also helps explain the low US WE, since there is the Rape of Nanking event that helps jack it up and so on.

Yes, I agree that the low U.S. WE is mostly caused by China still being neutral. Though having Taft beat Roosevelt in the election did not help.

Not only will I not be helping the Soviets at all since they don't seem to need it, I will also not be doing extensive strategic bombing to hurt the German economy. I will instead be building a large force of infantry, transports and tac bombers etc. and trying to make sizeable landings no later than '43 and possibly even in late '42. Without the U.S. it is going to be tough. Thank goodness they are still sending the Lend Lease Shipments.
