So I got the event where I find out that somebody is up to no good and get to choose between doing nothing and blackmailing the plotter - I chose to blackmail, but when the plotter responded and refused to comply with my demands, the "event choice option" still gave me the gold. The screenshot probably explains the situation better than I do.
