Summary

[BUG] Building a subway rail yard causes buses to 'freeze' en-route, clogging traffic indefinitely.

Steps to reproduce

Build a subway rail yard in a city with over 30k population and at least 3 bus lines.

Expected Result

Bus continue to follow route.

Actual Result

Buses will stop in middle of intersections or roads and block all traffic, they will not move and traffic will continue to accumulate.

Hi Sven!

Are you sure its the subway yard?

When I load your city what I see (even from your screen shots) I see:
  • a train station and a nearby underground parking garage
  • the train station can disgorge a lot of pedestrians at one time
  • the pedestrians grid lock blocking intersections (this is an old bug I thought fixed)
  • vehicles gridlock
The quick way to release pedestrian grid lock is to simply toggle a nearby affected crosswalk.

But the roads around that train station entrance could use some asymmetric roads.

The pedestrians have moved on and most of the traffic is going down and will be gone in a few more seconds. Note the upgrade to an asymmetric in the upper left corner also. Moving the crosswalks back from that intersection helps. Yes, some pedestrian will cross there anyway, but many will use the new crosswalks as well.

Hope this helps

Thanks, I'll try this out! I'm not 100% sure it was caused by building the subway, I just know that it only happened after I built the station. The huge amount of pedestrians accumulated because the buses stopped. I had an older game where the bus stopped en-route on the street (not at an intersection) and wouldn't move, I had to fix it by deleting the bus route. I'm not sure what triggers it, but if I come across it again I'll be sure to send it across!

Thanks!

Ok, I tried to implement the suggestion of toggling off the walkways, and there's definitely still some kind of traffic jam bug, because now there's a little green city car at the intersection, with nothing visibly blocking it in front that is just not moving and clogging the intersection. See attached.

You are really close.

The save game I attached was done without mods. Sorry, one house was lost due to zoning issues.

Load it up. Let it play and see what happens.

You have a lot of high traffic buildings on that road so the asymmetric roads and moving (not removing) crosswalks help that road handle all the high traffic building off of it. I would probably also draw a pedi path from the train station across that little strip of land out front to encourage the new crosswalk placement use (perhaps detailing it to look like a park).

I would move the parking garage, the taxi depot and maybe the crematorium to reduce the amount of traffic along that road.

Hope this helps you

Your attached save works fine, but I think there's a bit of a misunderstanding, I'm not encountering a design problem, it's a soft-lock gameplay bug. It's not that there is high traffic and its taking a while to clear, its that cars will get 'stuck' and never clear. Even if I leave it on high speed for in real time minutes, the car won't move. That's the main concern I'm raising with the dev team. If you go to my most recently attached save you'll see this with the city car driven by Hayleigh Beaumont. I think the car is trying to park on the street, but there is not a spot available, so it is stuck with no traffic in front of it, but it's locking the grid and everything builds up.

That's the main issue, not that it's too high traffic, but that a vehicle or ped will stop moving entirely, never clear, and cause a lock. I hope that's clear! I understand there's 'work arounds' by changing the street types that will cause the road vehicles to pop out and probably clear the lock, but it's still not an expected feature of the gameplay to have that happen in the first place.

Here's a different view of the soft lock, with the associated save. I do not play with any mods, and it's just the most recent vanilla game. The green car has no traffic in front of it, but is not moving. It's trying to park in an occupied spot, and the occupying car will not depart.

It's not about handling the volume, the car is stuck and that's the bug I'm pointing out. Replacing the roads may be a work around, but it should not be necessary to make the traffic work as expected. Cars, buses, or peds stopping indefinitely and causing infinite traffic jams is definitely not an intended feature of the sim. I hope this thread helps illuminate the issue and it can be patched in the future!

Amen to that!

Good luck!
