I'm reposting this from the Cities Skylines forum on advice from a member there. Original thread here:

I've solved this issue on my own, but it should be brought to the attention of the launcher devs. It was extremely frustrating to deal with. Just gonna post my original post, y'all can read the other stuff and attachments at the link.

Describe your issue
Installer finds existing version

What is your game version?
dunno, can't install it

What expansions do you have installed?
(DID NOT ANSWER QUESTION)

What mods are you using?
none, can't install the game.

Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
So I bought the game on sale just now, downloaded it, and tried to play it. It came up with an error box that I don't remember, but I chose the option to not have it install in the default location, because i have an NVME drive (A:\) with a steam library on it that I use for games. It immediately came up with "There is another version already installed." I did a bit of googling, and came up with "uninstall the paradox launcher" but when I tried to use programs\features to uninstall it, it gives me the error "Invalid drive F:\"

I tried to "repair" the paradox launcher installation, and it was pointed to an .msi file in an imaginary Stellaris installation on the imaginary F:\ drive, so I pointed it to the one in the cities skylines folder, but it now just outputs the same "Invalid drive: F:\" error once the launcher starts.

From what I've gathered poking through the logs, an unscrupulous former roommate of mine had been using my PC without permission back in June, and running Stellaris from an external drive that the launcher now expects to be attached. HALP!

I have found a post on the EU4 forum with someone having a similar issue, which jogged my memory about this roommate. It's located here: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/launcher-directory.1459022/ His solution will not work for me, however because I don't have access to the external that it was originally installed from.

Can you replicate the issue? If yes, please explain how you did it.

The launcher can't really help with stuck installs/uninstalls in Windows, whether of itself or other apps.

The normal approach to this situation is to run Ccleaner and Revo Uninstaller to remove the old launcher, or failing that MS's tool for that purpose:

I've had pretty much 100% success with those utilities.

Could you follow the link and read the thread? I don't want to type it all out again. The stuck uninstall was only half of the issue.

That thread is old and probably not relevant to the launcher as it is now.

Did you run those three tools I mentioned for you?

That's weird, I posted it on the same day I posted this thread.

I meant the thread at the end of your first post, I thought that was what you were referring to.

I have already solved my issue, as I stated when I made this post. If you'd bothered to read my original post, you would know that I did indeed use the windows tool to remove the stuck installation, but that only solved half of the problem.

PLEASE! Read my original thread to see if the launcher can be updated to keep this from being an issue for others in the future.

I've already responded to that thought. IMO it is not the launcher's job to fix Windows Installation problems, such as stuck installs of other apps or even previous launcher versions. Those three utilities I mentioned do that job admirably, IME.

What could be done is to write an installer ourselves so we don't need to use msiexec.exe , but I suspect that's beyond the scope of the launcher development programme.

Fair enough. Guess we've just had some miscommunication then. My apologies.
