OK, I've been playing as the Soviet Union. I helped wipe out Japan in China by 1940, allied with Republican Spain so as to beat the Nationalists, conquered Scandinavia(had to artficially declare war as, bizarrely, the Finnish winter war can't start if the SU is at war elsewhere.
My 2 problems are these:- 1) Republican Spain is now being wiped out by Portugal! This is because the RP Spanish units can't move. That is, the arrow shows as if they're moving but there are no actual attacks against adjacent enemy units, and the ETA shon is always 1 month or so before the actual date(so, if it's currently august the 11th 1940, it states that the ETA into the next province will occur in , say, 3rd July 1940.
2) My SU units have steadily had their org-levels pushed up each year by my putting the scale leftwards to "standing army". Yet, the SU units usually, though not 100% of the time, fail even against Axis units half their size(eg:- 11 SU INF vs 3 German INF and 3 Italian INF). I even fail when using 2 12-unit SU INFs against just 5 German INFs. The irony is that I have by now(December 1941), managed to conquer the whole of the Balkans(Hungary, Slovakia, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Yugoslavia, Albania), and have even managed to conquer most of the old Austria and a little of the old Czechoslovakia. Now, though, sizeable German units face each of my provinces and amphibious invasions of Rostock or Danzig don't work as even 1 German INF can hold of an amphibious invasion of 4 SU INFs,
My last hope is to leave some provinces empty and encourage German land units to pierce into Soviet territory so that I can isolate them. It only worked once so far with some German land-units that went into Lithuania, but that was it.
My big mistake was to invade and conquer Japan-held China, as the sneaky DAIM or SMEP mod got an event which made Germany ally with Nationalist China instead of Japan so that the Russian Far East will be taken over in a year or two.
Any suggestions on how to get the SU to win? I suppose I could go historically and just let the Axis go very deep into Russia and then isolate them in their weakenes state in winter etc.
