Spain DoW'ed me (Russia). This war will not be fought in Europe, but in Northern-America, where Spain and I have many colonies and cities. Most of my cities there have no fortresses.

How useful is it to start building (or expanding) fortresses in those cities at the start of this war ? When Spain cannot capture them within a year, before the fortresses are finished, it is OK to me. But when Spain captures a province before the fortress is finished, what happens then ? Will they get "my" fortress for free ? Do I have to recapture that province by seiging my own fortress ?

If they take ur province before the fort is ready, the construction in progress will vanish. There won't be no fort.

Thanks for your answer. So it seems to be stupid to build forts at the start of a war. When that province is captured soon enough, there is still no defence and 100d lost.

A strategy which is likely to be more successful (obviously depending on how everything stands in your campaign) is, don't worry about the colonies and go for the jugular. Invade Spain, occupy Madrid, and if you can take that in not too long a time, they'll happily give you all your invaded colonies back.

Of course, getting Russian troops to Madrid isn't going to be all that easy either...

And the lesson to be learnt for future colonies is, build a fortress first chance you get. You don't want to lose a prize overseas territory to one ship carrying one cannon.

Indeed. Thank God I have many troops at my colonies, so I can defend them, but I sure wished I had build some fortresses there. And I noticed that Spains cities in North-America have all small fortresses. So getting their cities will be hard.

A question on this theme.

If you or the AI are upgrading a fortress during a siege say from Minimal to Small, does the new troop levels kick-in if it completes before you/they loose??.

I'm going to try this and see, but if someone already knows the answer let me know.

Cheers, Ice:cool:

It sure does. Happened to me the day before yesterday, when the Mamelukes upgraded Egypt on me. They timed it very well -- I declared war as soon as our previous peace treaty ended, and by the time I got the guns up from Delta and started assaulting, the new fortress was completed halfway through the assault. The new forces kept me from winning . Had to siege them for eight months after that!
