This seems a bit buggy to me.
First the bug then the why...

I accidentally built one of the storage chests on top of a sunflower pot.
Why do I consider it bug?
Because while I understand that some items can be built on top of other items, but some are broken, for example I can not place the sunflower pot on top of the rug but yet the game allows me to build a storage chest on top of a sunflower pot when it comes out looking like the above screen shot shows it? Seems like a squishy, creepy crawly bug to me.
