FlagofModernBulgaria.jpg

Ave! Welcome to the country of Bulgaria. A land known in history for ripping Ottoman territory under there feet in the 1800's.

My Goals are:
- Create a empire to rival that of the Holy Roman Empire in size, basically dominating Eastern Europe to unite the Slavic world.
- Maintain Byzantium. If my duchy can revolt away with this much success, Byzantium can easily be crushed. If Constantinople falls ever, it muct be recaptured for Orthodoxy.
- Conquer the Holy Roman Empire, a task not easily done.
- Any other suggestions anyone might have.

Eat, drink and be merry, but always be Slavic. Enjoy the taste of the Slavic
world.

In the next day or so, I should have the first update on the first Bulgarian king.

The Rise to Power

DukeMatthaiosSyneresofBelgrade.jpg

Duke Matthaios Syneres of Belgrade, a "loyal" vassal of Byzantium.

Belgrade a buffer zone for Byzantium's northern border.People thought that if
PrincapalityofBelgrade.jpg

this border was to fall, bad things would happen. Franks, Hungarians, or pagans could come in, loot Byzantine territory, and give a open door to Seljuk expansion in Anatolia. However this was no worry to Emperor Constantine Dukas, but he died in 1067. Now it was a problem.

When Michael inherited the throne, vassals all of a sudden didn't like Byzantium anymore, and wanted to be independent. Belgrade was one of them. On 1070, vassals in the Balkans began revolting away. Varna was the first to break. Then Dorostorm, and Vidin. This lead to huge opportunities for Belgradian expansion. While Byzantium armies fought the Seljuks and rebellous provinces in Anatolia, Belgrade fought Byzantine enemies in the Balkans, eventually coverting all of those provinces. In 1071, the Belgradians, took control of Serbia. Adding more territory to Byzantium. The Byzantines loved us so much, they wanted to use our armies in Anatoila. Matthaios wanted to personally command his troops, so he declined and marched on the Seljuks himself. He gained some power amongst his vassals, and did the most treacherous thing ever.....

Matthaios took power for himself. He broke away from Byzantium unchallenged. Emperor Michael Dukas was furious in this, but quickly made a alliance with Bulgaria to defend her northern border. Shortly after Alp Arlsan of the Seljuks and Emperor Michael Dukas came to terms. Before then though, Byzantine armies had recoveted her Balkan territories, reseting herself to the norm.

With this alliance came a sacrifice though. In the terms of the alliance, Bulgaria had to protect Byzantium, and likewise until either ruler died. A opportunity came to use this treaty when the Princapality of Samos revolted in 1078.
King Matthaios summoned her armies, and invaded Samos, a Aegean Island. Matthaios had never been beyond Greece, so this territory was new to him.

Both rulers argued on the plan of attack. They could have charged up the hill, or take the long route, with had cover from archer fire. In the end Emperor Michael won the arguement to charge the hill. In truth he wanted to quickly end the siege so concentration could be kept on the Seljuks. So both armies equaling 10000 men, charge the hill on the small garrison of 1000. However such a tactical error caused a mishap, King Matthaios was hit by arrow fire when his charger tired on the upwards hill. Bulgarians believe it was the doing of Emperor Michael's "tactical error", but no one could prove it, so the Bulgarian army limped home in grief. Matthaios was severly wounded, and ill. Romanos Syneres, Matthaios son, almost usurped the throne and declare war on Byzantium, but didn't do it because there was no need. King Matthaios of Bulgaria died in 1079. Leaving Romanos as he heir.

King Matthaios is hailed as the first christan king of Bulgaria. A Orthodox kingdom at that. He set the proceedures for future kings. He also got science on it's feet, and ultimately improved living in the mountainous Balkans. Shortly after Matthaios' death, Michael died, ending the allianc and a uncertain future for Bulgaria.

How did you become king so fast ? Did you have claims on those other Princes (Varna, Vidin and Dorostum) ?
Myabe we should just except it with a grain of salt... I am reading this one.

What I am wondering, though, is where you found that flag....

I forgot to add that, Byzantium sued for a alliance. So when Byzantium was attacked, I could declare war. For a while I couldn't claim there titles, so thats when I fought Seljuks in Anatolia. Along with that there titles aren't that expensive to grad, afterwards. So I took the opportuntity

OK, I thought I had missed something. :)

Damn, that's quick conquest. Good stuff! With such a record so early on, good things are in store for Bulgaria! :D

Just make sure to post most of the events, we don't need to know every detail, but conquering Bulgaria proper is one of those pesky things you might want to include.

I found the flag on google. Under Bulgarian flags

Quick start.

Sounds good, and thanks for the tips, I had a odd feeling that some spectulation would come from that. I was quite surprized myself that was able to get enough prestige. Not that I'm complaining.

I should have the next update in a couple of days.

Romanos Syneres of Bulgaria, Second Orthodox King

With the death of Matthaios, Bulgaria was ready to accept her next king. Romanos was believed to turn the tide from the beginings of Bulgaria.

They thought wrong. Even with him being overwieght, he was definitely a ladies man. When he went on campains, and between his wife's pregnancies, he cheated. He had several bastard sons. (If you want to see them all, tell me and i'll do it.)

PatriarchofConstantinople.jpg

The Patriarch of Constantinople

Even with the cheating, he was a devout christan. When the patriarch ordered war on the Seljuks, Bulgaria was eager to raise the flag of Bulgaria over Seljuk cties. That was never the case.

With the fall of Constantinople to the Seljuks in 1099, the war with the Seljuks hit the Byzantines hard at home. There capital had been captured by the evil muslims. This was catastrophic for the Orthodox world. However the Pope launched no crusade, he wanted to liberate Jerusalem, but that changed.

The Fall of Rome, Again!

The Fatimids had moved on to the Papacy, and captued Rome. So the crusade was redirected to liberate Rome. Romanos felt the world was imploding, but hopes were high still.

Sofia, Bulgaria

1st Council of Sofia

"My liege, Constantinopolis has fallen to the muslims, as well as Rome. This is destroying the Christan world," said one duke.

"Agreed, the muslims are taking this war to a whole new level," stated a priest.

We must turn to God, what have we done wrong!" cried Constantine Syneres, heir to the throne.

Romanos held up his hand in silence.

"We cannot turn to God, he is wreaking his vengence for all three sites in muslim hands. Now man must step up to liberate these places. Christans muct caste down past hatreds if we are to combat this threat. However that will never happen as long as the patriarch and the pope exist. I propose a plan called Slavic Supremacy. This plan shall take in countries under our wing and and use there forces to combat Islam. Bulgaria will not rest until Islam is utterly crushed and converted."

People then stood up and clapped for a hour, of course they were all Slavic.

The first target was Croatia, a land plagued by muslims and rebels alike. (A title easy to claim!) First the Bulgarians assisted in the rebellion. Then the purging of the muslims, then the take over. It was quick, easy and in 5 years. This added more soldiers to the ranks of the Slavs.

But before they new it, Croatia was really plagued.

TheBlackPlague.jpg

This new diease halted many plans of Romanos. However this didn't hinder from a combined assault on Constantinopolis. However the battle was lost, and the Bulgarians litterally bought peace from the Seljuks. To fast though, in 1124, at around fifty years old, Romanos died peacefully. With a uncertain future ahead. Would Islam be combated, will Constantinopolis be Orthodox once again, or will the Europe begin the retreat at Islam's feet?

Bulgaria - bulwark of Christendom. I like it :D

The plague really sucked, however most of Europe has immunity from it now.

It really only lasted right to the begining to the next king's term, but it's a pain to handle sometimes.

And thanks for all the comments so far, I hope you guys enjoy.
