I was wondering if this is a common problem with byzantium(playing on hard, EEP):

I did not take loans as many people do. Instead, i invaded Duchy of Athens and annexed it early. After many many wars against the ottomans and venice with allies, i find myself controlling Thrace, Macedonia, Smyrna, Bulgaria, Hellas, Morea, Rumelia and Serbia. I am the dominant in the conflict with the ottomans, and can expand that way fairly easy. However, i find myself very far behind in tech. I have focused a lot on land tech, and i still have tech level 3 while ottomans and venice have around tech level 10. This has caused me to get immense problems even holding my borders when venice with allies attack.

There seems, to me, to be very little i can do with the situation. Any ideas?

Countries in the orthodox tech group get lower tech costs with high serfdom?

Anyone else have possible solutions?

In general, basic cost of research is the one of latin (catholic) countries..orthodox has higher costs (so is slower)..muslim even slower..exotic (asia, americas) the most slow. Ottomans, despite of their religion are in the catholic group.

One solution is that there is and event (dunno the name and ID) where you can accept catholic as your religion, this will give you italian culture and move you to fastest research group. (damn,i hope to remember this well  ).
Or just try to be rich enough to invest more into the research than your neighbours. You can beat them even they are ahead :D

Yes, that is always a problem with the Ottomans when playing byz. The solution when this happens is quite simply to use all cavalry armies when in war with the Ottomans - or rather one great cavalry army.

Hit the Ottomans in the clear provinces - try to make it your own as there seems to be some defensive bonus there (Thrace is GREAT for this purpose as the Ottomans and there allies is gonna have to get in there sooner or later, and you can reach Macedonia, Smyrna and Anatolia with ease, for extra cheap warscore points).

Basically you'll be fighting a war of attrition. They are superior in every other way, so win as many battles as you can without taking losses. If a battle seems to give you losses (bigger than 10%), then withdraw instantly when you smell these losses coming. Don't worry if the Ottomans take a province or 2 or 5. This is attrition. You can always take them back when they run out of cannons and footsoldiers. Also if it's a clear province you can siege it back while getting war score from enemies straying through.

Sooner or later the Ottomans are gonna have to sue for a white piece, and if things have gone well, they might even throw in a few provinces that you haven't even occupied (but you have shields on them).

Emm..one more thing (hint) - due to difference in technology, do not fight Venice on sea!!! They are more advanced than you and with their superior admirals (you have none) you will be doomed in almost every single battle.

Not necessarily true. If you can try and get a warship whn annexing Hellas. This extra ship will actually give you a fair chance against Venice now and then. When I need a few extra points in the war score I sometimes let my fleet lie in wait outside Morea (where you have home sea advantage and they have not) - then when a Venetian fleet comes by, you can ambush them and get a few points.
But be VERY careful. VERY. This idea CAN back-fire (and has done a few times on me). Even to a degree where you loose most of your fleet ... but sometimes it might be worth risking it

Well, i have already managed to take out most of the ottoman provinces. Thanks for the advice though, and thanks for the advice on tech.

One question: When is the event that allows you to change to catholicism and gain italian culture and latin tech group?

Good luck then :)
Not sure about the event (dont have EU here) but it triggers by date about 1450.

Well, there is the 'Council of Florence' event where you change to Catholic - tht gives Italian culture. - Later you get the chance to revert to Orthodox, but then you loose Italian if you do.

*********SPOILERS AHEAD***********

Much later you'll get a civil war, where the daughter Zoe must win. After that you get tons of events, such as spare the generals who rebelled against you? Always be nice. Be lenient. If you play the REALLY nice guy, and always go innovative in events - then finally you get latin tech group.

***************END OF SPOILERS******************

I don't know of any other way to get what you asked for - hope it helped!

When will this civil war occur? Must i play with any specific options enabled, eg. fantasy events?
