as i previouslly wrote byzhantum development(as ai) has the following pattern: goes fast at war initially smashes usually all the minors around for first 30 years; then it gets quiet some bb most times and gets dowed by hungary after 1450 wich weakens him considerablly and then by around 1500 caliphate finds its way to bosphorous....an ai event that gives about 10bb reduction might work towards its stability in 15 centuary; also maybe a few ai events that increases land tech; personally i increased A LOT all the military skills of its monarchs in the monarch's file but still same thing happens.

Hmmm. I added an ai event to give Byzantium more focus, but I guess it hasn't worked. It is a very difficult country for the ai to play, because it isn't very good at naval actions even at the best of times, it has some big enemies and conquering things around it generate more BB than for most countries because of the number of capitals.

What do we want an ai Byzantium to acheive normally? Personally, I think it ought to plan to keep what it has as a normal part of the game. For such a diverse nation with challenges that would be good. Until the Doukas period, when it could expand. What do others think?

That said, I have never ever seen Byzantium collapse competely and there is no reason why Byzantium (or anyone else) ought to 'do well'.

Indeed, I have been concerned myself with the Byzantine expansion in the surrounding territories - it just dosent seem to do well - ever.

Is Byzantine latin tech by the way?The Caliphate starts orthodox but maybe it's because of its rich provinces...I dunno.

and the Turkish set up needs to change, but I will see what we can do once I have the Al-Andalus files ready.

In my current game Byzantium is doing weirdly well! But anyway they do tend to do badly, one reason is that they have two powerful states on either side, the Caliphate and Hungary, as a player thats usually one big problem, and all the annexing I do probably doesn't help, maybe they should get BB reduction events for "reclaiming the empire" and "pushing back the heathens" of course maybe just for ai, one of the nice things about playing them IS the challenge

I have just reworked their ai-only events for the 1650s to give them a bigger push when under the Doukas leadership, with cores, troops and tech enhancements.

They are orthodox tech, but can gain latin tech through the relationship with Genoa, although this rarely happens for the ai, as they tend to mess up that relationship.

For me, I still think its OK if they rarely do really well.

I will post more about Calipah's ideas for Turkey (and more!) when I get a long sit at the computer.

i think i have an idea here; when the russian crusade starts maybe all the orthodox minors should look for byzhantum leadership and become its vassals :) at same time should get certain powerfull leaders and give it a CHANCE to reabilitate its lost empire :D and temporarry cores on orthodox lands ( depends how would "balance" the ai game) that would get to keep them if makes the "effort" :D...increase its diplomatic powers OR military ones depending on players choices. the event is already made but needs some relevant options and choices

Ok, haven't played this mod for ages, but this problem is old. Byzantium seldom survive the early 17th century. They ususally lose their major power status in the 1490s, get samshed to 1-3 province minor in the 1550s and get annexed ca. 1610. It's not that I even think the Byzantines should do well AI controlled but they should survive (at least to 17- something in a SP game).

byzantium isn't realy nvolved with the russian crusade...

I agree that they ought not to be. The potential results would rarely be good for the ai?

1. Capturing provinces a long way away that will cost them more than they are worth.

2. Heading north with their armies by event, leaving themselves open to their neighbours.

3. Being forced into a war with a Hungary which might be to big for them.

17 is a lot, but I still get your point.

The problems which beset the empire in the middle ages have not really changed by 1419: all those diverse cultures and so many other nations wanting a piece of them.

Not only is it harder for the ai to run a country like Byzantiumk, the choices for it are more difficult and the Turkish minors are far from weak.

i did not say get them IN a war...i basically would find helpfull for ai if gets a bunch of vassals; + would make sense "historical speaking"...i mean every single russian was looking towards bosphorous like arabs do to mecca, until it falled; but IF it survives ( abberation no?) it should be much more involved of diplomatically speaking and religiouslly, at least;
basically let the russian crusade trigger as it does, just all those russian minors become vassals; not only they give a TECH bonus to byzhantum but they also INDIVIDUALLY would have to deal with teutonics; it will also help teutonics in getting a resolution for once and do form the boyars league PROPERLLY not as 1-2 provinces i see it usually; many implications; i forgat to add in the previous post that the whole idea was noot only for byzhantum;

Hmmm. This is pretty interesting.
