On the colonization map every independent province has values displayed enumerating the probable chance of success for colonizing and establishing trading posts in the province. I know that the probability of success can be improved by occupying the province with an army or a conquistador, and that once a trading post is established the likelihood for subsequent attempts at expanding the post improves. The same is true for colonization, once a colony is established attempts to send more settlers becomes increasingly more likely to succeed. Are there other ways to increase the base probability of successsfully establishing colonies or trading posts?

Right, the hostility of the natives (if there are any) affects the success rate, so it makes sense to kill off hostile natives before colonizing. Also, as mentioned on another current thread, certain countries have higher success rates in certain provinces.

Right, and even more than that. For instance, Spain has a much better chance to lay down colonies as opposed to trading posts. Some areas give spain a 90% success rate on colonies and only 60% on trading posts. Most countries are just the opposite. Little Austria has the worst chance to set down colonies of any nation I've played.
