Hi,

I'm a newcomer to the game - and having gone through the tutorial scenario, I'm now wanting to play the game 'properly' without all those annoying popup windows. But it seems impossible to play the game without using some kind of scripted scenario.

I hate scripted scenarios. Never play them. Ever. I'm also not interested in the history side of the game - thats not why I bought it. I bought it because the game engine sounded really good (which it is).

Is there a way of playing EU so that you start up with a nation of your choice, and you actually have to *explore* the map, decide which territories are worth colonising, etc? In other words, like Civilisation.

Deathmatch, skirmish, call it what you will.

Is this possible? What have I missed?

TIA,

Bil

I hesitate to tell anyone how they should play a game, but I think you're missing a great deal if you don't at least explore the historical scenarios or the GC. They are where the real beauty of EU lies and you really will miss something if you ignore them. It's a little like going to a foreign country on vacation and spending the whole time in your hotel room playing Nintendo. (That's joke, by the way. Just friendly advice.) :)

. . . and even on Fantasia, the map's the same. If you're really not interested in history or in scripted scenarios, I'm afraid this probably isn't the game for you. I agree with you that the game engine is great, but what it's great at is recreating the historical aspect of the period. If that doesn't hold any water for you, there are too many problems with the game to make it worth the time, IMHO. You'd probably be better off returning EU, powering up CivII and giving that another go around. Good luck whatever you decide to do!

Ignore all these Historical People....

I recommend you play the Grand Campaign or Download the Improved Grand Campaign. With the IGC you can turn off Major Powers and be able to forcefully annex them. Or choice any country you like to play. The GC isn't a Scripted Scenario. There are Scripted Events in the game, but that just adds spice to the game.

Play the game in the style of Civilization. Just remember a few things. Badboy Rating, Rebellion, and History of the Country you are playing.

You are going to be rudely shocked to find out that you can't explore the whole world. For one reason or another. They decide to keep a lot of places in the dark.

You could play the Fantasia game. Which is suppose to be a Free Style game, but it's not random and there are too few countries in the game.

This game beats any Civ game. There is more going on in 300 years in this game vs Civ's 3000 years.

I would also suggest that you take a peak at the Random Scenario Generator available from my site.

Should definitly be something for you =)

Whooooaaaaa! How did I miss this? Can't wait to get home and give it a whirl. Thanks!

FWIW, I agree that you should just ignore all of those who think there's something wrong with wanting to play this game civ-style using non-historical random factors and random maps.

If you think about it, that's actually *more* historically accurate. In 1492, none of those countries knew what the future would bring, what the world would look like, which nations would expand and which would wither, or who the great leaders would be. It was all wide-open. It's unfortunate they didn't build in a more flexible scenario and map editing engine, but maybe in EU 2.0...

Thanks for your help guys!

Yeah, I know I'm 'missing' something if I ignore the historical bits - but what I enjoy about games like these is building up something from nothing. The trouble with all these scenarios is that you have to spend ages figuring out what's already been done for you, rather than doing it yourself.

I'll try that fantasy scenario & the generator thingy (thanks for the link!). Hopefully that'll be what I'm after.

Cheers,

Bil

You could try the Holland-GC scenario. Holland begins the game as a single-province nation having just declared its independence from Spain. It starts small, just like the Fantasia scenario, but there's plenty of history there too.

You can download it from the Scenario depot here.

I think EU is great, and you don't need to worry much about the historical stuff if you don't want to.

I enjoy the extremely important diplomatic aspect.

I especially enjoy that wars are are such a serious matter in the game. They cost a lot, and if they drag on too long your people start revolting and other countries start attacking you. You decide that you want to bulldoze some small country, so you declare war, and suddenly you have France and Spain after you.

I also like attrition. There was a WW2 simulation game a few years back, where I was able to beat the Germans with France in 1940 by putting all of France's units in one hex. If you try that in EU you'll rot yourself to death.

I also enjoy that the countries are different to play. I played my first GC as England, and now I'm starting in with Russia, and it's vastly different.
