Can no longer play the game

not sure whats gone wrong as it used to work fine.
But now when i launch the game saves and starting a new game just gives me a screen full of country map lists that r blank so cant see the map as they wont close and cant choose a country as the country map list boxes r empty and cant see the map to choose a country.. removed all the DLC and mods. rolled back to Vanilla beta. tried unistalling and reinstalling it. verified files nothing seems to work.

1st i thought it was the latest patch that broke something hence why i rolled back and tried every roll back beta but still the same. tried to reload my last save game same thing screen just coverd in blank country map list boxes that refuse to close. tried to open the side bar boxes but they opened under the country list boxes so cant even do research or build anything or see where my army is as the whole screen is covered in multiple country list boxes which have nothing in them excpet the words country map list select a country but none listed. Thought maybe the files were corrupt so tried verify files on steam no probs found. unistalled it and removed the folder then tried to reinstall it still the same thing. tried to use the menu to exit the game but that just got rid of al the top and side bars and left the country boxes and could not even exit the game so had to use alt, cntrl delete to bring up task manger to close the game that way. been trying for weeks to get it to run but now given up. tried launching from steam and from the EXE file in the folder makes no diff with or without the launcher. only thing i can think of is their is a virus or something wrong with the steam download. But its only efecting viccy 3 as 1 and 2 work fine as does HOI IV and all other other pradox games all working fine. only game that seems to be having probs is viccy 3.

Another problem is the cusor disapars once the game has finished loading. its fine in vanilla and earl grey betas but newer versions the cursor turns into a circle that wont move to click on anything

only thing i havnt tried is deleting the steam cloud save files as i dont know how to do that. so might be a problem with the steam cloud being corrupt and loading in stuff thats broken. the save files do go to 0 mbs when i uninstall the game but as soon as i reinstall it the cloud saves r back again.

Please do a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-Vic3
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Victoria3 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3 folders - In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam Victoria3 or Documents Victoria3 locations, before installing again.
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add Victoria3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.


THEN Right click on Victoria3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, cap refresh rate at 60.

DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3/pdx_settings.json .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log , exceptions.log

still no cursor with versions after earl grey Beta. but think the other problems r mod related. got it working for a few mins with vanilla and earl grey betas but when i tried to add 1 mod at a time to see if their causing the prob it went again. seems to do it with all mods even in the vanilla beta which they used to work in. even after removing the mods the problem stays so have to unistall yet again. did 1 mod it screwed up. unstalled and tried a diff mod same thing have 5 mods and all 5 cause the same thing to happen.
But from the DX log there does appear to be a vicky 3 signature error. ran that before trying to add mods. even after 6 clean installs and verifying files the same signature error is there. but veryfing files is not picking that up as thats says everything is fine.

Something else i did was clear registry of vicky 3 stuff before reinstalling which seemed to be better than just removing everything else. as just unistalling and removing folders didnt make any diff till i cleared registry as well.

We can't help with modded games here, so please disable them all while we work on this.

That system.log shows game version 1.06? You should be on 1.3.3 now.

I'm not sure what you mean by a signature error? Where are you seeing that exactly? I only see AppHangs against Vic3 in dxdiag.txt

FYI a Steam verify only checks files that Steam put there, not files under Documents.

You should update that nVidia driver to June 2023 https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

its on 1.06 cause later versions have no cursor. so had to roll back to 1.06 to get the cursor back.
When the game is loading the cursor is there and moves but as soon as its finished loading the curser turns into a circle and wont move so cant click on anything to start the game or even return to desktop so have to use alt ctrl del to open task manger to close it down. vanilla and earl grey betas r the only 2 versions that work.
Even after a clean install with no mods active it still does it.
But after some experimenting its the mods that r causing the country map lists to come up. so the mods r causing a prob somewhere but the cursor is not a mod problem as i cant get the cursor to work even with a clean install and mods removed on versions later than 1.06.

Only got the notification from Nvidia today about the new driver update. sometimes they take a few days or weeks bfeore gforce experiance lets ppl know a new driver is out but thats now updated.

been testing betas and none of the versions from 1.3.0 has a cursor. 1.2.7 hot cinamon spice is the newest version i can get to play that has the cursor in it.

During initialization the cursor is there but as soon as the continue, start exit to desktop bit comes up the cursor goes away so cant do anything.

thats the logs with another clean install with 1.3.3 with mods removed and unsubscribed before unistalling and reinstalling. registry cleared of all vicky 3 entries before reinstalling.
Still no cursor after 1.2.7 beta.

The only thing I've seen cause disappearing cursors with our games is custom mouse options in Windows , such as Mouse Trails. If you have that set up, please turn it off before going into the game.

If that's not the issue, try making a new Windows user and logging in with that - does it still happen then?

seems i have to launch the game as administrator to get the cursor to work.
not sure why as i never used to have to do that.

just tried a few things and only way to launch the game now is open the install folder look for the vicky 3 exe file right click and run as admin. if i try to launch from steam or the desktop icon no cursor. tried to change it so it always launches in admin but then it crashes with an error as soon as i hit play. so gussing i can thave it as run as admin in compatible as it then gives error msgs if i try to launch the normal way. so stuck with the long option of only being able to play via launching via the install folder as admin. But if u run in the 1.2.7 beta its fine. so to me its the updates after 1.2.7 that screwed something up my end. It works fine with 1.3.5 with mods cursor worked if i launch via vicky exe as admin.
but to play via the normal launch it has to be 1.2.7 and no mods.

I have no idea what on your machine is causing this to you. Try disabling the Steam overlay, and any others you might have active like Discord, Spotify and so on.

From your DxDiag it appears that you have a racing wheel plugged in. Could you try unplugging all console controller/racing wheel peripherals and see if the game works fine afterwards?
In our experience, disappearing cursor/cursor changing into a reticle can be caused by non-standard controllers or a controller simulation software interfering with mouse input.
